Considering he was there right so soon (sitting down right after running comment) he likely saw her back and the costume tearing and sped up to make sure he could cover for her. Since the other female teacher definitely went all out and Mousou-Sensei won, they both ran with their all, and he was there right after to cover her up.

Love the setup here. On one side, Katayama coming to this race with full intent on slacking off but ending up giving all he's got anyway so he could protect Hirosaki's virtue. On the other side, Hirosaki was taking this seriously but decides last second that she can't afford to strain herself at risk of losing her job ! … Still ends up going all out coz her kids were giving it their all, and so should she !

And then tanned tomboy still ends up losing, as they're wont to do.
