That was an interesting twist in the chapter plot structure: The story initially made it look like Emily was amazed by Sunao speaking English, but the end of the chapter revealed she, in fact, was amazed by how much he looks like her favourite anime character. I doubt his English registered at all.

I bet that meeting Emily is going to cause Otonashi to step up her game so she doesn't lose Takasugi.

Still though. Emily seems like a fun character.

I love and hate at the same time, how Japanese think, that being this clingy is normal in "western world". No one hugs you if you're not close friends, not to tell about kissing other person for a greeting. And even hugging is rather "reserved" for more mature people - I've never seen in my life girl/boy hug as a mean to great each other in high school - where, let's be honest, kids are most susceptible to all kind of "misunderstandings" between each other, when it comes to relation with opposite sex.

The kiss on the cheek is a thing in latinamerica, but overall yeah this is a clear misrepresentation of westerners' "informality"

American hugger? I thought Americans were pretty serious about their 'personal bubbles' - though I guess with how with hardcore the Japanese are about distance and status, even that much must be a cultural shock.
I'd say the more stereotypically touchy foreigners would be Western and Mediterranean Europeans with their close personal contact and air-kisses. Soviet politicians also used to be infamous for exceptionally warm greetings with bear hugging and actual smooching.

Really it depends man. Some people here in the west just are very touchy, specially if you know any filipinos, latinos or live anywhere near the coast.

It’s just something the Japanese mind cannot comprehend and it’s fascinated by, and also the other way around.

I once heard a latina with a Japanese husband say “you just don’t understand, it’s like catching a damn deer”.

Ah yes, the classic trope of Americans hugging strangers.

Now we only need an European character that goes straight for the kiss
