I like to think that it isn't because they are stupid more that they are power hungry and greedy. When they were on the heroes team they either failed or did nothing while Yuuri got stronger cleaned their ass and was winning over the hero and powerful people. A demon took over and they took it as a chance to kill Yuuri's reputation, potentially him, and probably make themselves into heroes to the public since that gives them power.

They don't need a beating they need to die, before the brainwashing they just don't anything in the adventures guild when the S rank adventures disappear (and probably some of them are responsible of some of those disappearing, bandit aiding, or village raiding)

Red tag was for the elf part too, when she was captured by the bandits. Although, I do agree, knowing how all his classmates are and the blatant rape threat early in the series. 100% gonna be what they try
