I don't see why she's pushing herself to continue to act according to her bad reputation. There wasn't anything in the contract requiring her to do that. In fact, it was quite the opposite. It told her to uphold the honor of the dutchey and refrain from engaging in any activities that might have legal ramifications - with her supposed affair with an engaged man brought up as an exact example of what not to do.
Yes but at the same time, he didn't deny when she asked if he wanted someone with bad characteristics. Because that was the individual he did request for (I heard you had some bad characteristics, but I guess that's why I chose you) so in some ways, she is kind of tricking him (since her family did the substitute thing which probably would be faced with serious consequences if caught). I think that's why she's really honing in on it. (as stupid on paper it may seem when you truly look at it) She's just really trying to fulfill his request to the best of her abilities.

Girl is about to get a heart attack from all the luxuries she's given xD
Honestly I would feel the same if I were in her position. If he really didn't want to get involved with me but still get provided financial stability, I would be in heaven. Especially if the only thing I have to do at the end of the day is to fulfill my duties as a duchess in public.

Smart? She's supposed to be smart? She's a fucking cretin. I'll write this as an appeal to any future authors—please, for the love of god, don't write your characters to be stupid when they're supposed to be smart.

Avril is extremely slow on the uptake and doesn't seem to see any advantages in revealing that she is not, in fact, a problematic woman the Duke thinks she is. No, the contract would not become “null and void”, because the contract didn't state anything about her being a “bad girl” in the first place. Her reputation wouldn't change anyway, and the Duke would trust her more. However, not only does she not reveal anything, this moron is now convinced that she has to play a villainess to avoid being thrown out? Seriously?

Yeah she is very dumb for thinking she has to play the villain.
HOWEVER, there's no reason to try to explain herself and Corina role on dirtying her reputation... Because she really has no way to prove she is saying the truth. Just think about it.
"So, my step sister, who could easily be my twin, went to a party and started acting like a slut sleeping with half the castle while saying she was me! For real, Im not the slut, she is."
It would sound like she is lying to save face.

The girl just decided to be a villainess like.....WHO'S GONNA BELIEVE THAT WITH THAT CUTE FACE!?

With the way she greet the duke politely and respectfully, he should be suspicious if she is really the villainess he ask for. 😭

...but I'm in for the ride with any cute shenanigans the girl may cause.

Nah this is just another classic case of overthinking.

You guys need to reread her thought process carefully. "The duke is looking for a wife who would not suddenly become damaged good if he divorce her after three years". Both of them know this marriage contract is a f***ing disgrace to the honor of any woman with self respect and dignity (now that I think about, most other manga out there treating a marriage contract so casually without thinking about the reputation of the women after divorce). MC assume this is the reason the duke picked her. A women with reputation can't be any lower like Arvil surely wouldn't have any problem with honor and shit in a marriage contract for the sake of money. She fears that if he found out she's not the "villainess Arvil" he would annul the contract, because surely a dignity and honorable duke wouldn't turn a pure and innocent girl into damaged good, right?

Okay, maybe she isn't as clever as I thought if she thinks the truth would get her divorced faster.

At most, she should think she has to seal the deal with the marriage certificate before showing her true colors because at that point it's too late to back out without harming her.

Also, that contract was...kinda vague?

1. What does "in name only" mean? That's not a legal term with a set definition, even if there's a common understanding of it. If he doesn't want her to cause trouble, then it should at least tangibly go through what is or isn't allowed.

2. "Playing her part as a duchess" was not specified, and what would that even mean? Does she have to fulfil typical managerial duties of a duchess? Is it just attending social events with him? Does she have to host her own events?

3. What does "an appropriate amount of money" mean? Who decides that? That could be ripe for abuse by a more malicious person. Who's to say less than a livable fund isn't appropriate? Or half of all his assets, depending on the laws of the country for standard divorces?

Rather than lack of wits, I'd say her problem is a total lack of an ego. She's a Yamato Nadeshiko character, who is not supposed to have any desires of her own, her whole purpose is to support the family. Avril does have an agenda of her own, supposedly, yet it's nothing but freedom from being abused. That's something an animal already wishes for, so it's not much of a deep human personality trait. A person could have the potential to be an earth-shaking genius, but if they have no motivation to put any of that latent talent to any use, they won't actually be a genius, ever.
