We had raised furniture at my old house when we still had dogs, we had to move the chairs out once a week to retrieve about 12 balls / toys for them. Although we would also always know when they lost their favourite toys as they would either spend ours trying to retrieve them with little success or lay on their side looking under the chair longingly once they realised they wouldn't be able to get it.

I just realized . . . pounds/kennels/shelters must be crazy now. Like jail cells! Did people give up dogs after this? What about euthanasia? Is it legal?
