I didn't say selfishness, but her motivation is most definitely self-serving. Similar but not exacly the same. She feels inadequate, like you said, but she's not turning Youjij down because she doesn't want to be a burden. It's more like she feels she needs to part ways so she can catch up, so she can be worthy of standing besides Youji as her equal. It's all about herself. Sure she tries to make it seem like this separation is for Youji's benefit too, but that's not her primary motivation. Her motivation is about herself.

What I think is most amazing about this story is that Youzi managed to pick up on the latent gay tension between her mother and Ren and start shipping them. Kid's got a good head on her shoulders.

This backstory makes the story more precious imo. They are truly happy now, after so many sacrifices. Just...I want them to be in a more explicit relationship. Right now they are (almost) always together, but they need to put words on these feelings.

Exactly, it's pretty explicit too

"If you reject Youji, she gonna be taken by someone else" - "Maybe so, but I still want to be able to walk side by side with her"

"Time is a magical time, it can make you forget the feelings that were once so intense"

But when then time passed, after years of separation and 14 more years (little Youzi age):
-Ren's songs still remain as Youji favorite songs, the only songs that Youji could remember who the singer
-Youji still remembers Ren's small habit mannerism like "Ren rubs her finger when she lies"
-Ren confessed to little Youzi that she "do like her mom" and told her to keep it a secret

So you could say their feelings were so intense that it still there after decades passed, but while Ren fully awares of her feelings, Youji can't seem to have the courage to look at hers, I guess it because Ren once left her so absurdly

Then you should re-read carefully to enjoy it more
The mother never had multiple love interests, they're all work business with the film they acted from.
The mother's favorite songs and only songs she can remember the singer during and after 14+ years separation are belongs to Ren
In the past, the mother did want to break the friendship with Ren and to be something more, but Ren rejected her, as the reasons stated in this chapter

Gosh I feel like Ren Wei might be a bit selfish but well whatever, things work out in the end. I suddenly feel like watching la La Land because of the "chasing dreams" aspect presented here.

I totally love this panel's composition I noticed that the line of the road seems to show how far Ren Wei needs to catch up to Youji. Or I'm just tweaking and I need to go to sleep

I can't believe that time flies so fast, fyi I was still a middle school student when this series started and now I'm a student going to university.
So I got a question for everyone, where were you then when you first started reading this comic vs where are you now in the present?
