Habit, he grew up in an era where men smoking was to be expected, plus he probably did a lot of it during the war.

Honestly the city is actually a decent place to raise kids, it has all the amenities you want, hard to take your daughter to ballet class or your son to boxing in a small town or village in the middle of nowhere, but in a decent city you have more than 1 option in a reasonable distance for any activity. The trick is finding the right city though.
