So in Japan, you have to be married for a father to get paternity leave?
That's different in Sweden. Here, if you're not married, you register as the father, and then you get access to all those perks.
In a way, it's easier if you're married (common-law, or via some church, either works), since a bunch of things automatically happen, but it's at least possible (and not at all uncommon).

Not sure how much of it is romanticising it, and how much is just "it's the way things are" for salary men... Rarely do I see it shown as a positive, usually people are grumbling or at least really tired and happy to be out.
