This really comes across as if the author realized: "wait, what am I doing? This isn't a battle manga..."
And just retconned the whole thing, with, honestly, what the story should actually be about: low conflict, eerie weird shit that's actually wholesome.

Not limbs flying off, fighting to the death, making a deal with the cross-roads devil, having your child be kidnapped, complicated magic puzzles.... <_<

I mean, it was a very well done battle manga though too, at least in my opinion. The last bit with her mum hit me too hard to give it anything but praise.
