as long North Korea exists and/or officially sign a peace agreement, they have been for decades at a technical Armistice and thus any Korean male that has reached adulthood has to go and complete their obligatory military service, kind of how Japan and the Soviet Union and then inherited by Russia never technically signed a peace agreement at the end of WW2 and they are at an official Armistice ( Japan/Soviet Union and then Russia are still laying claims on the Kuril Islands ) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuril_Islands_dispute

You have to go to military service for a year and a half by law if you're a Korean citizen. It's been a long part of their lives sadly, and a lot of people miss out on a lot of opportunities. Tons of stories of girls getting NTR'd irl cuz their boyfriends were out in military and they got lonely. Pretty sad affairs, but I doubt that's where this story is going.
