It's manga so I don't really care to much, but "it's okay because they're step-siblings" doesn't track for me in this case. They may not be related by blood, but they've grown up as family their entire lives, especially from her perspective.
Blood ties aren't the only thing that makes incest troublesome.
Some step-sibling shows are a bit better in this case, like DomeKano. The characters in that were already adults/nearly adults, who also had already known each other before becoming step siblings. At that point it's not a big deal.

@DrHizzle Preventing incest babies is the only good secular reason to oppose incest. When there's no blood relation or reproduction is impossible, there's no good secular reason to prevent the relationship. At that point, you're abscribing people's right to love to either some religious ideology or some belief that is otherwise rooted in "common sense" that shifts decade from decade anyways. You might as well ban homosexual relationships on the grounds that it was common sense that they were disgusting 100 years ago. I have qualms against homosexuality in practice, but I'm not going to pretend that those reasons aren't almost solely religious.

@encrypted12345 Not even including parent/child incest, which should be obvious why it could cause psychological problems, even sibling incest has a VERY prevalent issue with it: grooming.
The actual idea of incest in a hypothetical setting may have nothing wrong other than the genetic issue, but in real life you'd be hard pressed to find incest without some form of grooming playing a part in the development of the relationship.

Yep, if you want to leave the world of manga and talk serious, romance between former family members is bound to be emotionally screwed up, and not worth defending hard. Then again, that also applies to... relationships in general. People are selfish and immature, and mostly pursue relationships to fulfill some shallow emotional/sexual needs.

The world of 2D is all about ideals. In this manga, the love between the characters isn't due to some emotional manipulation, but rather a result of their deep relationship naturally evolving in a romantic direction. Hooray for wincest!

@Mangamonger @DrHizzle Eh... I'm sure a good percentage of NBR family relationships are problematic, but is that a good reason to ban them entirely? "Normal" relationships can easily be problematic, but any illegal activity within them is dealt after the fact such as domestic abuse. I just don't think that there's a good reason to ban NBR family relationships in particular when more controversial relationships are legal such as extreme age gap (as long as both parties are of age of majority).

Oh, im fully on board with tightening laws on age gap relationships too. In fact, that was a big part of my thesis for a paper i just wrote in english class. Because of how our brains form and what parts we use at different ages, i believe the age at which one is legally considered an adult should be 25.
Also, when something is so common like grooming in incestous relationships, it'd be pedantic to say "but it's not the actual incest that's a problem, it's the grooming!". Technically true, but avoids the problem instead of dealing with it.
