MERRY CHRISTMASSSSS AND HAPPY NEW YEARRRRRRRR

AND HANUKKAH AND KWANZAA FOR THAT MATTER

hey did you guys know that vanitas no carte/the case study of vanitas by mochizuki jun also updated like yesterday. coughs

before anything else. i knew i could trust yatsuda teki to make sataki and kazusa's dynamic yet another "sataki harasses a pathetic man constantly because he can't do anything right and she has to clean up after him every time" situation. it will always hit.

this short flashback of kyo and yaichi's further conversation and kyo retrospectively pondering on it hit me really hard. the multiple philosophical quandaries of this nature being invoked and cited here are insane truly and help highlight not only the depth of the themes and ideas that myther itself possesses, but also how human beings from centuries ago probably felt as they first put these ideas to paper. IFs are gonna be especially vulnerable to existentialism—their existences are entirely conditional to beings not themselves—which tragically just humanizes them even deeper. "i think therefore i am" was essentially the advice yaichi gave kyo to stay sane throughout this transition, kyo describing his sense of purpose and belonging turning into a blank void (VANITAS), this notably being the first time kyo is realizing what death actually is and what it truly means (ONCE AGAIN VANITAS), this is just. so so impactful and thus all so tragic.

what really is sticking to me is that yaichi very meticulously, artfully, caringly describing what he does for himself and what he'd like kyo to do is very familiar in a specific way. grounding oneself through the five senses that connect the body to the world outside is a very common and effective technique to cope with panic attacks, depersonalization-derealization symptoms, general dissociation, etc; it allows you to focus your mind on the most base and important facts about yourself—your existence as you stand in the world, simple as that—to prevent spirals of anxiety and other stressors from overtaking your health. these techniques are defined entirely by the human body, it is the instrument that facilitates any relationship between the outside world and an individual. IFs only ever borrow bodies. their masters are the true owners of the bodies they dwell in. any state of existence at any point will always be temporary, a ticking clock until they must relinquish to the master—both in the lore-wise sense of an IF's master and the literal sense of any system they serve. it's so, so sad.

on a better note i'm very impressed and relieved and emotional over the scene of kyo actually applying these grounding skills taught by yaichi. it's meaningful in a way beyond words that the first time he does this, the first time he truly reconciles his relationship with the world, what he believed, his own body that is not his, is when he finally questions his relationship with kano. where he indeed manages to realize, perhaps not in full but with weight still, the pointlessness of how unconditionally devoted he's been to kano. as i've said before in previous chapters' comments i've always been waiting this scene, this moment of clarity that kyo needed to eventually achieve, and i've always been bracing myself for it to be violent and destructive. instead, this is what yatsuda teki has given me. the tear he sheds is devastating yet liberating. i wonder if he's ever cried over anything else before. i'm very proud of him.

not enough praise for this mangaka my goat my hero because i really owe them by entire life, inheritance, children's lives. i could never have expected them to actually take the leap and choose this as the method of advancing the plot. capitalizing on sataki's character, vitally her role and relationship with kyo, to tie her directly to yaichi's character, with his role and relationship with kyo, is absolute genius and the most i could've prayed let alone ask for to have with sataki's character. i should know better than to have such low expectations for the treatment of female characters with this mangaka but i can't help but be cautious sometimes, i'm so glad my expectations were blown out of the water. even setting aside the importance of these two making contact to the greater plot and narrative involving the prosperous nation and its ruling government, the perfect thematic ties in creating a dynamic of deep understanding and a common goal of liberation between the first IF to have ever been utilized as a weapon for the nation's greater good and the retainer who was raised with the duty to make sure said weapons stayed weapons? it's indescribable. regardless of whatever specifically caused yaichi to come to sataki for help and even beg her with such desperation on his face that he deliberately did not hide an ounce of, this simple encounter instantly solidified for them both that they understand one another far too well. more than any other character, even kyo himself, they both individually and together exemplify the human spirit in even the worst of circumstances. not even due to how naturally their hearts bleed which we've already seen, but because of how they embrace this part of themselves. despite the risks that may come.

this is my favorite chapter to date. and it is the one that raises the most death flags for sataki and yaichi who are both my #1 favorites now.

i think yatsuda teki just knows me personally and likes to torture me. most evidence for this is sataki's hair freeing scene knocking my lesbian ass right to the ground.

GOING ON BREAK RIGHT AFTER DROPPING THESE BOMBSHELLS TOO THIS BITCH IS INSANE

coughs. see y'all next time
