Protagonist isn't the typical annoying virgin we always get in series like this, so that's a plus.
Protagonist also acclimates to his new environment pretty quickly, rather than being confused and totally out of it. Another plus.
There's another male character present, and he's a huge badass ogre. That's also a plus. Hell yeah wingman.
First girl is a squid. Very rare to get something that's not a cat, elf, or other typical fantasy girl. Neat.
There's a group of bumbling "heroes" who are just fodder, and appear to be recurring. I like this trope.

The summary sounded like mindless schlock, but this was a pretty fun first chapter.
