Hey, he is a mangaka, do you own justice.
That aside, i feel like that is just a thing in mainstream, or just harem thing. Because from my experiment, Childhood friend is the way.

Childhood friends never lose because harems never get resolved anyway

It's always the new girl... Why can't the childhood friend just win for once?

the childhood friend almost never wins coz they dont go on the attack until a new girl appears and by that time they already lost, being overly passive is where they fail

it doesn't matter if they're childhood friends or not

all that matters is who gets the first appearance

Fell from the sky... Sora no otoshimono ref? Yeah, in that case, the childhood friend's worst enemy literally fell from the sky. 😆

I feel like I've seen childhood friends win before, but I can't remember any.

Either way, that was a cry against injustice for heartbroken waifus everywhere.

@Tcof It's a matter of planning. As far as I understand, most people start with creating main love interest, while "childhood friend" is a trope or afterthought just to fill character quota.
@Hollow7F If they couldn't do it for three to ten years surely they won't be able to do it in hundred and fifty chapters span.

I think Omamori Himari had a harem ending but I honestly can't remember.

Yeah, the real reason childhood friends lose is because that's just a cheap way for the author to create drama using a sympathetic character. And often that character's whole personality is literally just "likes the MC and knows him for a while", so they are just a walking trope.

Detective Conan, where almost every character love interest is his/her childhood friend.
