That aside, i feel like that is just a thing in mainstream, or just harem thing. Because from my experiment, Childhood friend is the way.
the childhood friend almost never wins coz they dont go on the attack until a new girl appears and by that time they already lost, being overly passive is where they fail

As far as I understand, most people start with creating main love interest, while "childhood friend" is a trope or afterthought just to fill character quota. @Hollow7F If they couldn't do it for three to ten years surely they won't be able to do it in hundred and fifty chapters span.
Yeah, the real reason childhood friends lose is because that's just a cheap way for the author to create drama using a sympathetic character. And often that character's whole personality is literally just "likes the MC and knows him for a while", so they are just a walking trope.
