And slavery isn't vile ...

We are all slaves to the big corporations and our regional politics.
The only differences is, that they stopped literally fucking us and started to just abuse us.

If this follows the novel, he does in fact get laid. And married. He's not a beta male, he's just not a sexual assaulter. >_>

Indeed the generic plot for Isekai are always like that, but there are some series that going the other way.
The most savage one I can remember is Kuro no Maou. The MC in that series keep getting trashed, nothing good actually happening to him, Shit has gone south.
There are also Hero summon but betrayed by their allies for example Shield Hero and Nidome no Yuusha.
I personally don't like Nidome no Yuusha since its a avenger type of series, so the story kinda squeezed into revenge purpose only. Unlike Arifureta since the MC doesn't give a fuck on revenge.
And there are also effort base hero for example The Wrong Way to use Healing Magic. He is blessed(LOL) with a teacher that can train him to the OP road.
I choose some examples that are available on manga platform, try reading this if you are interested. There are tons of the Isekai series out there that are not serialized yet.

"'My life was shitty then I died. But then I woke up in a totally awesome fantasy world with crazy superpowers and whoa all these girls suddenly are in love with me.' Isekai is nothing but trash-tier self-fulfillment for awful Japanese-Otaku writers."
The reason why they need a shitty past life is to give the MC a driving force to aim for more better life in Isekai, thus aiming/obtain the usage of OP skills. The girls are not suddenly in love with the MC(unless he have some charm skill shit), the MC usually interact with the girls, help and probably interested her somewhere with his personality. The girls are just attracted to MC just like a normal human.. nothing special here, just a woman loves a man. I don't get it why are you rant on the Isekai genre, Isekai is a good boy please don't be mad at it. The story tends to happen that way, can't help it. And lastly I hope you can change your mind on Japanese Otaku, since bad writer will just be bad regarding any of his job or succeed.

return of the former hero(on novel updates) is an interesting one, it's starting point is the epilogue, the hero has defeated the demon lord and returns to the king and he just wants to settle down, but because conniving nobles are arguing over his war potential the king decides to just get rid of him, as in the court magician unwinds the summoning spell and he poofs back to earth. so he spends several months working on magic formula for a reverse-summoning spell, casts it and ends up someone similar but different (if they are the same world but different time or different continent or wtf isn't known yet).
also he has a reason for being unable to "invent modern tech in the fantasy world", he was summoned when he was 12 and spent 3 years gaining skill and power before beating the demon lord so his book smarts are shit, but he isn't retarded, just uneducated.
also also, yes he still gets a harem but they are actually interesting, and no slaves (he was actually wondering about that and looked at a slave store but all the girls had those "dead fish" eyes so he NOPED out and never went back)

Interpret this however you like but, this feel rather cartoonish for some reason.

Despite doing the whole slavery and harem rigmarole, this is surprisingly good.

The artstyle reminded me of Eromanga Sensei and Oreimo which doesn't make any sense because there is no incest in this one lmao.

Imagine a world, where the protagonist gets a cheat like power from God and has the potential to become the strongest being in existence. All he need is to grind a bit, and he can become a untouchable personification of death, reincarnation of doom, a freaking demigod. Imagine a world, where the low IQ and lower part of said MC limits all this potential. Instead of grinding exp and skills, he decides to stay in the starter village only killing the local equivalent of a slime. Congrats, you just imagined this manga.

The MC is really a huge disappointment.

@jameaney If he became able to erase cities with a snap of a finger, he wouldn't be the laughing stock of the town either.

Almost getting killed by the rabbits a few minutes after spawning should have been a warning and a wake up call and not a way to escape. By the time he went and almost died in the battle against the Dragon, surviving thanks to plot armor, other MC's would have soloed the damn thing.
If this was a darker manga(or novel if we talk about the source), there would be a quite high chance that he would get stomped by a random demon or some baddie a few months or years later as the end of the world is approaching(he has a 20 years limit and God clearly hinted that only he can prevent it from happening) and he did nothing to power up and stop it. His harem members would end up getting killed, raped or NTRed just because he lazed around instead of doing the work he was originally "hired" for.

I understand that he set building a harem as one of his goals and has a sheep(or call it rabbit) mentality, but a supposed NEET that loves RPG's gets isekai'd and instead of doing the most obvious thing to do in a RPG, that is leveling you character and skills(knowing that the fate of the world is on the stake) he instantly goes a total noob route lazying around in the starter town, just because there is a priest girl that might be interested in his D?
I wouldn't complain if it was a normie that was transferred, but as a lifelong RPG player it kinda pissed me personally off.

I am not saying the manga is bad(it really is trying to be as cliche as possible slowly covering all isekai tropes there are), just that the MC is really really really disappointing.

The romance is nothing special, simple and to the point. More character development than most isekais, but nothing drastic. The MC is strong but not op, and moderately intelligent. The series actually has a fairly realistic view of polygamy and slavery, as well as some of the basic points of negotiation, poverty and dealing.

There's no deep lesson or investigation in this series as of this writing, but it's more in-depth and developed than the vast majority of isekais and doesn't spend too much space on superfluous exposition. It certainly deserves a 7/10 by any measure, and I'd call it an 8/10.

Special mention for polygamy; it's not described in any great detail, but it follows the historically accurate version of polygamy, which is that it only works because a large segment of the population is dying in droves on a regular basis.
