So now we finally see Karen's parents, and I'm reminded of my comment from back in chapter 4:


Based on the fact that they look ragged and homeless I can assume "crime" or "money" (or both) is the answer for "why would they do that", but that just makes everything else more confusing. These parents don't appear to be powerful (literally, socially or financially) so it seems that yeah the landlord and school simply rolled over without a second thought.

Were the parents always like this and Karen was just so oblivious she didn't notice? Or were they completely normal until only a short while ago where they suddenly got into all these nefarious acts? Considering how positive of an opinion Karen has about her parents I'd assume the latter, but everything is written so poorly in this manga that it's genuinely hard to tell.

Other comments on that chapter expanded on the reasons, the month's rent was refunded and deposit pulled, the school has paid tuition, that was also cancelled for the refund. No power necessary, everything was just about cancelling early to get the partial refund for what was left of the month.

Can the school's tuition even get refunded? They seemed to be in the middle of the school year so would that still be returnable at this point? And all that withdrawal paperwork was handled in less than a single workday? Well I say that, but the MC was permabanned from the adventurer's guild with the swipe of a card so maybe things are just that simple in this setting. I dunno, at this point I feel like we're giving this setting more thought than the author did.
