We should talk about this. Specifically about the reaction that's been had here, and how that's a worrying sign due to the time, effort, and rage in this situation.

The choice was made to lash out at people you don't even know, and spend your energy attacking them. This is not the behavior of an adult, these are not the actions of someone in a healthy mental state. I'm not saying this to attack you or to insult you; I'm trying to clarify where I'm coming from and to say that you need to really think hard about what caused this outburst of rage.

I'm going to state this again: I am not trying to attack, insult, demean, or degrade you. I am being genuine when I say this worries me, and I want to take the chance to call out the behavior so that it can be considered.

Finally, to your point that you made: I cannot speak for everyone, but I can speak for myself. When I functionally "downvoted" your post, it wasn't entirely due to your critique of the use "scum" (although it is worth noting there's nothing to suggest the author or TL's use of scum doesn't fall into exactly the meaning of the word, so I don't personally think your post is correct). My main issue with your post was that, like your reply here, it was an instant attack against someone for no real reason. No one was harmed in the making of this manga, no one needs to be "fired". Even if they HAD used a word incorrectly, that was not a reasonable and measured way to critique someone's work, especially when we are talking about a freely-posted, freely read piece of fan media.

TL;DR - The reactions being shown are out of proportion to any actual slight or harm that has occurred. Taking time to measure a reply, and to think through the implications of what someone is saying or doing, is a more mature and wiser state of action.
Thank you, Superpeanut, for saying this, as it is aligned with my feelings on the matter as well.

Since you've basically said all that, I'll then go a step further and use the time I was going to put towards responding initially to address the usage of scum itself. "Scum" on its own does, in fact, have its own negative connotations towards people; the equating of "scum" (as in the unwanted, stinky frothy foam skimmed from the top of a soup or broth or other liquid) to "the lowest class of humanity" dates back to the late 16th century; it's most likely that this is due to the use of "dregs", referring to the unwanted sediment left after fermentation of liquor, in a negative sense (as in "useless residue, the most worthless part"), in the early 16th century, and both terms having fairly similar concepts that they are considered synonymous, such that "dregs of humanity" and "scum of humanity" are saying the same thing.

Additionally, "scumbag" is actually derived separately but from similar connotations, referring originally to coarse-woven fabric bags used for straining sugar, in the 19th century; and then eventually this was applied to condoms, with semen being treated as the scum- yes, condoms were referred to as "scum bags" in the early 20th century, which was then derogatorily used as reference to people themselves, popularized by Frank Zappa, John Lennon, and Yoko Ono's song of the same name made at Fillmore East in 1971, with Frank Zappa even saying that the song only has "two words" and they're "scum bag", rather than the fused singular word that we use today.

So, even if the reaction that I (and possibly others; I won't speak for them) had wasn't due to the overly harsh reaction of telling Black Beat to "fire their proofreader because they didn't speak English", it would still have been warranted to indicate that it was wrong to say that scum was used incorrectly.
Far from an instant reaction it's a frustration long buried finding an expression over a series I'm slowly developing much affection for. I typed out several versions before settling on the simplicity of bombastic hyperbole.
Other than mild pertubance my mental state is fine thankyou, that yuou think it an act of "rage" speaks more for your tendencies towards projection.
What led to my second post was that not one of you were willing to actually reply to my post and express what you felt was wrong with my words, you merely "reacted" at me for daring to make a thoughtcrime. I had to actively call you out to get any sort of interaction at all.

"that Scum" is clearly incorrect for actual english usage, to claim otherwise is ridiculous. It follows the same common grammatical errors you see such as "those trashes" or "our staffs" with its origin clearly from english as second language (ESL) users who proliferate such bad usage without correction.
To be clear since I presume you will hang onto this unless I take time to clearly point this out. but this isn't some attack on those learning english.

I'm letting this go at this point, since I don't think you're fully taking what I'm going to say to heart:

  • That Scum is a perfectly fine way to use the phrase in modern English for common speaking. It is not an issue.
  • I already covered "my reaction", said what was going on, and do not feel a need to defend it further. I said my point, and you've blown over it to decide for yourself what I really meant.
  • You attacked others, insulted them, and then went on the attack again after someone challenged you on it. To go after others in anger, is rage. If you're so hell-bent on correction the usage of English grammar, then you can spend some time on that term and history instead.

Have a nice day, I'm going to be blocking you and moving on with my life. I hope sometime you take the time to consider what I've said, and take the time to treat others with empathy and care.

"That scum" is perfectly correct English. Here's some useage by George Orwell:
It's only the bad food as keeps all that scum away.
Here, Orwell uses "that scum" to refer to people.
And here's an example from Lori Soderlind of the use of "that scum" to refer to a singular person:
Walter was obsessed with taking down the mayor of Passaic, New
Jersey, where nearly every day reporters found more evidence linking
that scum to the mob.

More generally, "that X" is a general grammatical form to refer to a person with an epithet, including dehumanising epithets, for example "that [bellend]", "that [trash]". etc.

But it's used there in a plural form.
In this chapter it is being applied as a singular, it just feels intrinsically wrong.

Other words would work far better. There're hundreds of great insults so why do they keep using scum? What is the original japanese word that is being rendered as scum?

So it seems clear you guys (@Superpeanut @TheResearchGuy @Shrimperor @Oblidescent @Sobol35 @Xakorik @Amariithynar) don't seem to know english either, otherwise surely one of you would find the time to explain how the word scum should be used instead of impotently lashing out?
A sad state we find ourselves in.

"That scum" could almost be let off if it were actually the short form of scumbag but clearly it isn't, some of the uses could be replaced with "such scum", "what scum", or "that scumbag".
The use of "is scum" and "people that are considered scum" are fine.
English has a rich history of insults and swearwords one could explore to add more impact if you are interested ebough to apply them.
"What's a scummy low down dirty cheating scumsucking dog like you doing here.", "How dare a chickenshit scumbag like you try and preach at me.", "I'll rip that filthy lying sonnovabitch a new one."

BTW the female casts from the main team each has a main colour. Melt is pink, Ann is orange, Sakura is blue, Setsuna is green, Laiha is purple (I think). And while the 1st disciple isn't in the main team, she has a yellow theme going on.
Edit: actually I don't think Laiha has a colour theme, enither did Elena. Polulu is gold

I hope the fruits samurai trio would return as allies, their abilities are too good to appear only once... Their competency are rather questionable tho...

And Ryuga pretty much feels like a co protagonist, at least at the point I am.

Oh yea he is great. Ryuga is the author's take on the "secondary rider with trouble past". A lot of the times they get just as much development as the primary rider, like Hanto in Gavv.

None of them were brave enough to actually challenge me and explain what they thought was wrong with what I said so I thought I'd force them to.
I can't stand this subhuman downvote culture where people feel it's acceptable to just go "nooooooo i don't like this" instead of putting into words what they specifically disagree with.
I blame reddit and its social media brethren for poisoning human interaction. It only fosters a kneejerk groupthink hostile to the truth.

I get you bro, but tbf it ain't that deep.

I do agree with you now but in the end it's just a simple mistake the group made. The strikes/downvotes could be because they just didn't like how you phrased it or they didn't like that you pointed out an insignificant mistake to the overall context. It is what it is bro but I respect your passion to it all.

Dude called for someone to be fired because he didn't like that person's perfectly acceptable use of the English language, and then crashed out over down votes and being explained too why he was wrong.
