"It's just a normal dragon" makes me think that his two previous lives were in some pretty hellish worlds. He lived a lot longer in those worlds than in the current one, and he stayed in a village in what looks to be the boonies. It's very likely that the village knows very little about the monsters outside their lives.

And for lack of knowledge. Given how near town was to that village. Given how many adventurers there are. How dragon was near to that town, I can't really agree that monsters are somehow unknown. Especially dragons. I would agree not knowing common monsters. But legendary?

I tried to rationalize it myself but could only come to conclusion that author wanted a result (op MC who wants normal life but keeps showing off skills) without any work done on how to achieve that. Basically lazy writing.

@404chaos it's always like this. Somewhat forced idiocy to create accidents. But I'm less annoyed about common sense, since someone who's OP as him and those who he had mostly around him don't see a green dragon as strong (and who knows time wise how strong/weak the dragon is compared to his time).
I'm more annoyed about him being OP but yet too fucking dumb to realize there are people pretty much a few steps away, but then actually probably able to sense/know far superior assassins/thiefs who knows what with actual skills and proficiency for hiding, etc... That's totally contradicting and idiotic.. Especially in the middle of the forest "not paying attention" but seeing the green dragon from far high but not the dude with the carriage a bit further away..
