No other sword will do, only a katana, huh? Good luck whacking armoured opponents with the katana, though, and keeping it pristine. Many parts of the world made more economic swords because armour there was much better and more ubiquitous than in Japan, and thus a blade would be ruined faster.

@Kaarme He didn't even say here that it has to be a katana, just that the sword he has now is crap. Even that blade on the spare sword he borrowed before didn't seem to hold up to how he wanted to use it for very long, and he said that one was fairly decent. If this is worse than that he'll break it in no time if he isn't more careful with it.

I'm sure he'll end up only making katanas if he ever gets around to use that blacksmithing skill but honestly, even without remembering it properly he seems like he has decades worth of experience with them. You don't ditch your favored weapon style for something else after that long. These Japanese authors are definitely way too obsessed with cramming katanas into their isekai settings, but this one at least added some background stuff to the character so it would make some sense instead of it just being an all out declaration that glorious Nippon forged steal is superior like we often get.
