The author basically killed himself along with the antichinese statements he has made on public.
That is the main reason this series basically died, sad because it has a good story, but they say you can destroy what you built most of your life in 10 sec by making a bad post.
The author gave up too many spoilers to trace it to Nanking.

The argument I've seen on Chinese social media (link for reference, will see if I can find other sources) is that the main character is a coded reference to the Nanking Massacre on the following grounds (I'll be using this for the numbers):
Body count of 912 while in the Chinese Mafia: Japanese forces surrounded Nanking on 9 Dec 1937 and commenced hostilities the next day.
Body count of 3712 over 4 years during a World War (Assuming the LN is set in 2014 and the character was 94 years old at time of death, this would have been from 1940-1944, so it's referring to WWII): The Nanking Massacre started in December 1937 (and would persist through to February 1938), like you stated.
The main character lived to 94, died of old age and was never tried for murder (see Chapter 1): Prince Asaka Yasuhiko was never tried for the Nanking Massacre as he was a member of the Imperial family, and died of natural causes at the age of 94.
In addition, the act of "killing by blade" in WWII brings to mind the infamous (and widely-publicised) incident where two Japanese officers had a competition to see who could kill the most people with their swords. These were likely Chinese prisoners of war instead of actual combatants - although the original reports in Japanese newspapers claimed that they were combat kills - and happened just before Nanking.

Incorrect TL. What he actually says is "bbune! Ken mottoite yokatta!"
which would translates more like "That was dangerous! Good thing I had a sword!"
'bbune”(っぶね) is a slurring of abunai, "Dangerous".
Seriously, I learned JP entirely through exposure and even I know that TL is wrong. Sometimes I question TL decisions.....
While I'm at it, in 37.2, last page:
There are several problems with this line. First off, where did 'crazy' come from? Second, he is saying he HASN'T gotten serious yet, not "It is getting serious".
"Ano sa, kocchi ga honki dashite ne- no ni, maou-san ga nigeru to ka, bucchake dasakune? -tsuka, nigasanee-shi."
This would be more correctly translated as "Even though I haven't even got serious yet, for mr. Demon King to run away, ain't that kinda lame? Or more like, I ain't lettin' ya run."

Wow, uh. Thanks? I read Raw manga often, so I'll often catch issues like this, and when I see things that I feel are clearly mis-TLs, I do often feel the need to correct the record. Though I suppose I should've admitted that the asshole hero's excessive slang and slurring of words does perhaps make it a bit more difficult to translate than a normal line.
Like how the Sayonara Ryuusei, Konnichiwa Jinsei TL still calls the lamia girl "Selia" even though her name is clearly "Serina" in the raws. Despite the fact that around 30 chapters have passed since her introduction and this mistake still hasn't been fixed.
