Starving their enemies to death, murdering the remaining troops (as explicitly mentioned in one of the earlier chapters). It's also mentioned they served as the "security enforcing" troops, which is an excuse to pillage and rape the population. The latter was done explicitly and the former was implied it would happen again when they said an earlier territory was ravaged by war despite formerly being a very fertile land
