I like this series, not just cuz its a power fantasy
But also cuz it tells human stories you can sympathize with.
Imagine being the wife, your husband and father to your kids goes out to war. You know war is deadly, and that he may not make it out alive. But most civilians are not desensitized to death of their loved ones.
Then you hear the explosion of the front gate and witness the aftermath of the battle. With 99% of your country’s army gone, your subconscious has already accepted your husband is dead. You’ll have to raise your kids without a father, and likely won’t receive any money for his service. You’re looking at 1-2 decades of menial work in poverty while raising your kids until you croak of either old age, overwork, or illness— or maybe all three.

It’s not even really a happy ending though tbh. Probably 500+ other kids no longer have fathers. If you’re the shield guy, all of your coworkers (and probably friends that did heavy infantry with you) are now dead.
Yes, you are alive, but will probably be haunted by the deaths of your friends and PTSD for the rest of your days, and will probably turn to alcohol or drugs to deal with it.
