Prologue one and two are out of order, and when trying to read prologue two, it shows up as Chapter 12.5 on the chapter list selection thing.

Pretty damn good compelling mindfuck, I'll tell you that.

Wow. Incredible. This author always punches me right in the soul. Is it supposed to hurt this much?

Another great work from Asano (I really like the guy's works, okay?)

Once again dwelling into the darkness of the human mind, the violence, hatred and guilt, with some touches of fantasy and psychological horror without completly falling into it

You can draw some similarities between this and Asano's other works, you know, the dialogue heavy, dark, pessimistic and violent story. This overall tragic and terrible story, is told through multiple time jumps between the characters, making it quite tricky to follow but quite distintive from other works, but at the same time giving each character their own time and space to display their demons

Usually with Asano you get characters with different personality traits. This time you get a bunch of them being the worst (I mean at least at some points you would feel sorry por Punpun) None of them are likeable, not even a tiny bit, but I guess that was point?

And also, as most of his work, the art is impressive and detailed, not as refined as DDDD, but you can see him going in that direction. Although, you can see, through most of his earlier works, the same characters designs over and over again, but I think that's nitpicking a bit on his overall great storytelling ability

TL:DR
Another great "awful" story by Asano. The time jumping storytelling device may make it a bit difficult to follow

Asano always does an incredible job of making every single detail unsettling. On an unrelated note, I like the teacher’s character design the most.

I dont get it.

I think i understood the story but still do not get it. I'll put the story in somewhat chronological order while marking the Normal (N) and the Paranormal (P) elements
(N)
There was once a family consisting in a Blonde woman. The big tooth guy and two children. The children were Ari (the comatose girl) and the glasess kid. The blonde woman divorces and takes the glasses kid with her. Then leaves the glasses kid with his new dad (the mustache man in the hospital, mr. Suzuki later seen in the graveyard).
The blonde woman goes back to this town and dies, possibly by cutting her own throat by the tunnel(1*)

(P) The Blonde woman and the child Ari might be the same person, or are connected by the same power (Eren style). Seems its due to this power's influence that tooth guy killed her. (2*)
(N)
The caffe owner (PsychoPedo) meets Ari, together they craft the story of the monster and the butterflies. Then PsychoPedo rapes Ari and smashes the eye of the school teacher that saw him.
The child bully also witnesses this and turns psycho.

Ari now starts preaching about the monster story to the other children, they start bullying her, the injured teacher lets it happen out of resentment. The bullying ends with Ari getting shoved into a well and ending comatose for 10 years.

Some time during this glasses kid who was also getting bullied (and potentially abused by his new family) jumps off a roof. On his recovery he meets a man who gives him a box, he belives this man is god
(P) This man might also be himself from the future (*1)

Glasses kid joins the school, meets short hair girl, bully, future cop, frog kid and ugly girl
He looses his tin box some time within the year
Bully(psycho) assaults frog, future cop stops him by bashing him with a brick and throws him down the well
(P) Blonde woman/Ari/ well monster might have revived bully to have him do stuff in the future
(N)
Glasses kid gets close to ugly girl and meets her brother PsychoPedo.
Frog tells his parents about the bullying. Glasses kid who wanted stuff to remain exactly as it was find this deeply upsetting and chimps out attacking frog with a broom. The rest of the class now ignores him out of fear/bulling. He chimps out again and is stopped by ugly girl, getting even closer.

PsychoPedo kills his family (including ugly girl) and burns his house down, he meets and spares glasses kid because he saw the necklace gifted on his previous meeting.
Glasses kid regains his tin box
Glasses kid sees Ari for the first time and considers using his box
(P)
Glasses kid was going to revive ari but its stopped by possessed bully because "its not yet time"
Glasses kid might have at some later point met himself from the future and given the tin box to glasses adult.
(N)
Timejump 10 years
Teacher is unhappy with her life and she and/or her husband abuse their children.
She kills herself by the tunnel entrance a short time later
Bully adult meets up with short hair girl, then kills a supermarket owner that was extorting big tooth guy. Then becomes a tunnel goblin.
Short hair girl is shocked by the murder and opens up to her boss, the caffe owner (PsychoPedo) about how they bullied Ari into a coma.
PsychoPedo now decides to kill her
Bully/tunnel goblin kills psychoPedo to save short hair girl.
Short hair girl now keeps tunnel goblin forever in her home.
(P) Tunnel goblin is possesed to give a delivery mission to short hair girl. She does it and ignores any detail about it.
(N)
Frog kid. Now frog adult assaults a school gets arrested and goes crazy.
Ari revives, big tooth guy (ari's father) immediately kills himself.
Future cop, now just cop realizes that everything being conected is not a coincidence and starts yelling.
(P) it seems at this point Ari stopped possessing tunnel goblin and he might have become more brain damaged.
(N)
Glasses adult learns from his dying father about his blood mother. He vents to an old man
(P)
The old man is himself/God and tells glassess adult to wheel him to the hospitalized glasses kid.
(N)
Glasses adult goes to his hometown, meets short hair girl in the cementery
(P)
Glasses adult is handed the tin box by glasses kid
(N)
Glasses adult meets up with Ari ( his sister)
(P)
He immediately rapes her??? Then beats her ??? Then runs away. Here he learns that its his sister, possibly also his mother. Also this might have all been a vission

Fin

1* At the end wheb the cops mention the recent suicide by the tunnel (teacher) they mention that 10 years ago a woman also slit her own throat by the river. This would coincide with the dead woman found on chapter 1 who was big tooth guy ex wife (blonde woman, ari/ ari's mother)

2* We are shown that big tooth guy kills the blonde woman but that might be a vision like the rape of ari by glasses guy, the suicide is mentioned by cops and would coincide with the normal events.

So the only way this story makes sense is if its all happening at the same time, both past and future are in the present and Ari can see all at once through the butterflies? The best indication of ari being the butterflies is at the end where short hair girl kills one like knowing its related to the girl she hates.
issue is it is also implied that the blond woman is also the butterflies (the dark shadow on big tooth guy at the beggining was clearly an addult and seemed intimate.
Another story would be to take the epilogue at its word and say that god ended the world by making everything an eternity. Thats why we see stuff that seems to be time traveling. And it would mean the vissions are just other possible timelines from the same eternity.

The one thing i dont get are the 2 random boners panels from the big tooth guy when talking ti ari about the dead mom, and from glasses kid when talking with the teacher, sure contextually its not nonsenssical but what is the point of it in the story?
And with the random rape at the end??? Maybe like an oedipus thing? Still its hard to see it as something meaningfull, dont know the author but it just felt like they were adding one more rape scene for shits abd giggles before closing the book.

Also frog kid, why did glasses kid chimp out so much about him? And why did he in the future go crazy? The only thing that comes to mind is that he was responsible for getting the children to sacrifice ari, but theres not much to support that thought. He was clearly being bullied for being fucking ugly and the bully needing to vent about his raped and comatosed girlfriend.

Edit i didnt notice it at first but its 100% confirmed that big tooth guy raped ari as a child and as a comatosed adult. On the prologue you can see her with blood dripping from her legs before entering the tunnel. And on the same prologue we se a hospital and a man having intercource with someone, the man has big teeth...
