Yeah, it really breaks the immersion when the whole cast is worlds apart in terms of strength compared to the MC because the reader has to wonder how such an unbalanced world hasn't crumbled yet when everyone except the MC is so weak - it gets even worse when the bad guys are somewhat powerful and outclass every native by a mile except the foreign entity that is the MC who usually joins into an already existing universe. It cheapens those stories immenselyYou know, it is kind of nice when side characters can actually hold their own. It makes the world feel bigger, more alive.
That's why I like OPM. It has an enormous roster of side characters that are usually perfectly capable of resolving whatever danger is going on by themselves, and while the main character is a ridiculous outlier that CAN resolve anything instantly, that strength is very rarely actually needed.Yeah, it really breaks the immersion when the whole cast is worlds apart in terms of strength compared to the MC because the reader has to wonder how such an unbalanced world hasn't crumbled yet when everyone except the MC is so weak - it gets even worse when the bad guys are somewhat powerful and outclass every native by a mile except the foreign entity that is the MC who usually joins into an already existing universe.
