So my prediction for this final chapter was off by miles... which is not exactly a bad thing. In fact I'm glad the final chapter wrapped up almost everything, instead of a predictable open end. Tatara achieved his dream instead of some open-ended bull like "The adventure continues". Good for him.
My thought process reading this chapter:
1. Demon Lord looks a bit... underwhelming, but considering he(?) has never been hyped up outside of Abaddon's words, not a bad thing. My focus was more on Albert. With him looking like an undead I was prepared for a time-skip of a few decades.
2. A shame we didn't get a full panel of Excelia's new scabbard.
3. Akatsuki, huh? A bit tame compared to cool-sounding names like Steelica or Excelia.
4. At least I got 1 thing right about Excelia being called Mama, but it's not super surprising.
5. Tatara having a statue to himself and being paid respect to? Please tell me he just became famous and still alive.
6. Phew, Tatara looks alrigh- Homura? Aw shit.
7. Myne won in the end. Good for her. (At this point I was still thinking this was a timeskip to just after Tatara passed away, thinking Homura is his son or grandson)
8. 400 YEARS???? It just made me realise how bittersweet that most of the cast are long-lived or immortal. The thought of the girls outliving Tatara actually never crossed my mind, despite me knowing how old they were when he met them.
Overall it's an unexpectedly bittersweet ending. Tatara achieved his goal, granted Myne her dream and both of them lived their lives to the fullest. The imperials, elf, robot and dragon live on, with memories of them in their hearts. It's sad to see them go, but their legacies live on.
One gripe of mine with timeskip endings like this is the "Where are they now?" section, and unfortunately with such a far timeskip into the future, we don't see other supporting characters like Gant, Feldera, Hadomu, Phoenix or even Lunarre. Especially the mummy duo - considering their whole deal is to face "The End", it'd have been nice to see them facing the Demon Lord with the party of heroes. Hopefully the final volume omakes will address these.
All in all, it was a good ride. Big thanks to CClaw for their hard work.
made me sad. I knew they'd do the hundreds of years later instead of the demon lord coming back when Tatara is like 40 to 60. Coulda brought his ghost back like whats her faces grandpa or w.e he was.
@Dri the main goal was completed, the criminal side characters besides abadon were not important. It is better for the story to finish before it becomes stale and you hate it.
short and sweet manga. I just worry that it'll never be picked up for an official English release now, because it's already over and too lewd for most publishers to touch.
