EXACTLY.
A mage must know BOTH of the temperature magics, both heat AND cold, to be able to cast each!
Also, it makes LOGICAL SENSE for a fire mage to know ice spells so they can extinguish their mistakes!

He's not talking about FIRE and ICE as opposing affinities. It's FIRE and WATER. Ice was categorized as unaffiliated.

Should've left out "opposing elements" and just stuck with "multiple affinities = nonhuman."

If there's no magic battle or competition, then readers don't need to bother about opposing elements that will never be used to oppose each other.

They look cute :)
@icam98
Maybe it's because she has an understanding of temperature that she can use opposing elements? 🤔

Rofl. My bad. I guess I read the first two chapters so quickly my mind just naturally fixed it and only just noticed the weirdness this chapter. Lol. Sorry. I really goofed. 😆

Thanks again for the translations!\o/

There'll be serious plot coming soon. It's the main story driver for the 2nd half of Arc 1 and the 2nd half of Arc 2.

Depends.

Maybe the affnity isn't actually fire/ice, but the direction they can control the energy.
"Fire" affinity means you can increase the temperature/gather heat energy.
"Ice" affinity means you can decrease the temperature/disperse heat energy.
"Wind" gives kinetic energy to the air and vector of it (and by the power of isekai person will also be applicable to other objects and turn into just "psychokinesis")
etc.

Just because you can do one doesn't necessarily means the opposite will come easily.
If I tell you to disperse a clump of powder, that's easy, but if I tell you to gather up the scattered dust again? Good luck doing that using the same tool you had before.

Well, apparently Randy CAN use multiple elements (wind, water, ice), but that precludes him from using fire (since it opposes water and/or ice, it's kinda unclear). Even if we don't get the full details of the magic system, what he said seems appropriate.

Ice might be designated as "unaffiliated" [see page 30, bottom right panel], but the point still stands.

Nonetheless, there seems to be a veritable cataclysm in the comments about how/why all this magic stuff should/shouldn't work, so I'm just gonna say "We should wait and see what happens next."

@Dreadkiwi After thinking on it, opposing elements is fine. It's just a little extra to threaten a potential witch hunt.

If that ever happens, do what Randy did. Work for the Prince.
