I mean she may not even have a remaining role. Summer break is over it seems, and they only really reconnect during summer break. Unless a year in universe goes by without anything happening she probably won't have a major role to play. Also I don't know why so many comments assuming she is going to be some kind of love rival. This just doesn't seem like that type of manga.

Thats why I think she probably just served to contrast this chapter. Instead of trying to wall himself off from her like he previously did with past friends. He is accepting of their current relationship, and wants to remain friends. Showing that he has improved in his mentality. Unless she somehow transfers from her private school I doubt she has a major role to play.

Notice how he didn’t even THINK about cleaning his shoulder even reflexively when he did for that other girl.

That hurts so hard even if it was unintentional. Tbh I would've react in the same way this girl did.

Although (small) details like this adds to the characters since it communicates Nakayama is completely used to it with Nishino but still not around other people.

I'm not usually a fan of gimmicky dynamics in romcoms like this guy's phobias, but this has such a great pace and progress, super enjoyable. Just hoping the girl from the previous chap isn't too big a disruptor. I'm proud of him for telling her that made him happy even though he's embarrassed.

usually I hate when a peak girl is introduced just to suffer.

I think NewOld Girl is better with him as good friends. She is an absolute sweetheart but there's no spark and I think she she serves as both a good contrast and good character motivation. If he was with Elementary Friend, he never would have grown. And him feeling like he was dragging her down and feeling gutted about it explains his motivations and why he's so deep in his shell.

I get that perspective. Though, I feel like she still liked him as more than a friend. She was just more "respectful" of his boundaries than Nishino haha, opting to keep her distance when he asked her to. So even in that outcome, she still "loses" and likely ends up being sad. She seems to still like him, too.

I think she likes him in that more-than-friends-less-than-lovers way. They are very close and she's clearly hurt, but I think its more in a she wanted to be his closest friend. She's not jealous he has a girl he likes, she's jealous that girl was able get through his shell.
