as per usual, I am struggling to understand what she sees in him and why she is making the effort in the first place. It is an all too common trope that FMCs throw themselves at meritless MCs for absolutely no reason. I just wish that writers could come up with a somewhat comprehendible excuse for why the FMC is throwing herself at a pointless NPC.

Have to not noticed the change in the material? The rise of the simp? Japanese culture has changed and Manga is reacting. Yes, it is their culture and there is a level of acceptance, but when you are constantly being assaulted by unrecognisable character qualities, the frustration can leak out. I don't see how it is toxic to question your relationship with the artform as it evolves. It is debate, just because you disagree, does not make it toxic.

absolute insanity in the comments, i don’t know why you would even read a story that is upfront about having an mc with ocd/germophobia if you’re incapable of feeling basic empathy towards people with the same symptoms

phobias aren’t rational by definition but they are a hugely common thing, you probably wouldn’t call someone a weirdo or a freak for being scared of and avoiding a spider or something even if it’s harmless, i don’t know why you would treat someone who avoids germs the same way

it really makes me wonder how people interact with those irl with the same issues if they can’t even understand the plight of a fictional character that basically spells it out for them instead of a real person with deeper nuances

I usually don't like to push back too much again people who are in the manosphere and spout incel rhetoric because on some level I understand where they're coming from, but by God, stop watching manosphere content and try to engage with people in the real world and more mature narrative. Even stupid tropey mangas like this are deeper than the kind of content that lead you to call people simps or NPCs.
Even if you were right about mangas having gone in this direction, using terms like those does nothing but alienate most people from the discourse. And it's not even true. How long have you been reading manga for? It's been more than a decade for me and I assure you if anything the ones that didn't go mainstream were a lot more "simp"-like before. Rather what's been bleeding into it is the same toxic rhetoric with lots of mangas about guys being betrayed by girls and taking revenge by finding someone better, or acting as if the only good girls are those who are completely submissive to the MC, which is also partly caused by the rise of Korean manwhas which are nothing but the same endless repetition of cold, callous MCs whose only qualities are status and power and eye-candy vapid women with the personality of a broom.
It is toxic because you are the ones changing mangas in a toxic direction, it is not the other way around.

The "manosphere" eh? Now who is being toxic? I'm missing characters like Miyamura from Horimiya, Yuuki Izumi from Shikimori's Not Just a Cutie and Sakuta Azusagawa from Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai. We are hardly talking about Andrew Tate levels of male toxicity here, just ordinary high school boys. They can be quiet, introverted or even an otaku... But the current batch are such a caricature of spineless simpery that they almost appear to be unable to survive on their own in the outside world. Also, can you supply any evidence that my comment "alienates most people"? I can only speak for myself, but you appear to be confident that you are speaking for the majority. Must be nice...
