I believe it's about the folks who huff and puff and get all sorts of snobby about The One Right Way To Listen To Music and having The Perfect Setup For It.
...but I could be wrong.
(also, I guess the word itself is kinda wrong since it's about sounds and not audio, which kinda implies music and/or technology, and not something like "heheh, funny drop goes plop")

Anyone I've seen calling themselves an 'audiophile' for a while now are rich dumbasses spending thousands of dollars on audio cables that have quartz crystals strapped to them to make the notes 'flow better' through the cables. Even if it's digital, it makes the 1s oney-er and the 0s zero-er and gives them a fuller sound which they can totally hear yup yup. Anyone I know who's a genuine audiophile has stopped calling themselves that because they don't want to be lumped in with them. Your area may vary!

- and yes, that is all classical music on LP, and yes, that's only part of the record collection, and yes, I do have a much better system elsewhere in the house for 'serious listening')....

Every 'audiophile' has something they get a bit wound up about (for me, it's how to clean records). However, not every one of them necessarily wants to push you into a five-figure stereo system. I personally am of the opinion that the best system for you is the one you listen to. (It's just that my system does music better than that.)

Also, stay away from the cable guys. They have issues.

Yeah, I saw the movie, "issues" is putting it lightly...

I fall into that camp to an extent as well, what with my LackRack full of gear and fairly good near field monitors, variety of headphones, etc. Gotta admit though I prefer high quality digital, and even when the vinyl had the best version of the mastering, I'd rather a really high end record player setup is used to digitize it...

But yes, audiophile, whether used derogatively or not, refers at least most commonly to audio reproduction and hifi gear. Tsumiki just enjoys certain sounds a lot, which is a different thing.
