I'd say the romance is just there as a garnish. The real meat and potatoes of the series is the food... the meat and potatoes.
The romance is cute and seems largely unimportant, but I do think the series would be a bit more boring if it was removed.
Yeah, the romance aspects of this story (especially later on between
) aren't exactly the best kinds of romantic stories out there, but at least they still make sense within the story's context.
Especially for the eventual romantic relationship that I gave the spoiler marks above, at least it takes place somewhat naturally over the course of several volumes to actually make the relationship more sensible (though still not the best romantic story out there, let's be real).
