This is one of those chapters that I think every volume has at least one of these days where it's a complete bottle episode, and there's no plot advancement of any kind. It's just meant to be silly.

You saying that explains why the à la Carte editions (Oishinbo's official English translations) were released in the anthological format, because this is what Oishinbo is for most of the time.

They're practically filler chapters, but at least the dishes look good, so I'm not complaining when I read them as a way to improve my appetite when I'm eating something.

This is one of those chapters where it's like... The setup and the resolution feels like it doesn't connect.
Like, I suppose the guy is not actually so hungry that he literally always needs a ton of food to be satisfied. He actually can be okay with regular sized meals, he just chooses to eat a lot all the time for who knows what reason. The resolution being "Wow I need to appreciate food more" feels flat because we don't even know why he's like that, he just does it.

Yeah, I think so. Although there are some other reasons that the full series wasn’t done, I think. The whaling volume stands out as one that would not have gone over. There are some others like the chapter where they talk about eating horse, etc. That most western audiences would not find acceptable.

It seems to me that it was entirely a setup to a single punchline about him asking for a huge portion only to get dirty looks from Yamaoka and Tomii and then sheepishly ask for a smaller portion.

I kinda would’ve liked more character development in this chapter, but it just seems like it was one long setup to a single punchline.

Oh yeah, the Whaling and the Horse Meat Match chapters, they definitely won't survive if they're translated into English since they'll just get slaughtered lol.

Still, those chapters (including some very late ones about eating dog meat), at least IMO, actually show how unexpectedly accepting the manga is for more niche and unusual traditional dishes that most modern people (Japanese and anyone else) would probably never want to eat because they think they're disgusting or don't align with their morals.

Even so, I understand if people don't want to eat them, especially if the sources are like shark fins and whale meat, since catching their sources will only harm the overall global marine environment.

This chapter makes so sense and goes nowhere. He ate all that and said he's only 80% full, how does one bite be enough
