Yamaoka…I appreciate that your own feelings are confusing for you, but you DO let her cuddle up to you on plane flights for 8 hours. you should probably stop doing that if you don’t want people to get the “wrong idea”

I got really curious since last chapter and found that raw Norwegian salmon only really seriously got seriously promoted in Japan in 1992, which is a year after this volume is published, and didn't take hold until 1995. So it's really just because it's not a thing yet and not because author slacked in his research.

I wonder how will a salmon match fare if Norwegian salmon had taken root sooner. Like in this chapter the author clearly needed Yamaoka to lose because drama so he concocted this raw salmon kerfuffle, but if "100% safe parasite free raw salmon" had been an option, what would he have done?

I assume he would've found some flaw in Yamaoka's technique, or, like basically what happened, the disagreement between Yamaoka and Kurita caused some minor overlooking of cooking which allows Kaibara to excoriate him.

I've come to learn as I've done these TLs over the last couple of years, that he will find a way for as long as possible for Shiro to be beaten because the whole of the thing is that the formula is that Kaibara wins and will win for a very long time...

This is more like my own headcanon, but the reason I think Yuzan is so unbelievably pissed off more than usual is that the fluke infection victim referred to here is Rosanjin, the one who taught Toyama-sensei (his own teacher and the only person he respects), and as stated in so many chapters ago, a real-life artist and gourmet (who actually inspired Yuzan's character) that Yuzan always wanted to surpass in everything.

While I'm not sure whether Rosanjin also taught Yuzan, I believe that, despite his desire to surpass Rosanjin, Yuzan very much respects Rosanjin as a professional and as an inspiration, and is personally horrified by the infection that killed him.

Although I think Yuzan would've been just as pissed if it were someone else who died and not Rosanjin, Rosanjin's death from liver fluke, I think, adds to those personal reasons for Yuzan to be so angry because he doesn't want to suffer the same fate as Rosanjin.

I think this is because the author just characterized Yamaoka (when it comes to love) like your average shonen manga MCs, who are so unbelievably dense in romantic affairs, even when women literally started throwing themselves at him.

At least there's a bit of an excuse for Yamaoka (since he never wants to get married because of his shitty childhood due to Yuzan's abusive treatment of him and Yamaoka's mom — resulting in him being so unbelievably oblivious to certain social cues).

But I won't lie that sometimes I too want to blast Yamaoka in the face to tell him not to be so oblivious about love, so people won't get the "wrong idea" (even though said people have become very much insufferable, like Kinue and Noriko).

I appreciate that Tanimura has remained consistent (and likable) throughout the manga so far.

Yeah, he's stayed consistent when most of the cast havent. Very appreciated charactee.

I do wonder mainly cus I'm european, and because of the love drama...like...isnt it frowned upon to date in the workplace? Like I know some places in the west strictly DONT allow it. I dont know how it looks in Japan, and even less in early 90's Japan office spaces.

Like would they be fired if this was real?

It was (and still is) basically impossible to get fired from your job in Japan.

Well, no duh. That's obvious in a general sense.
My point was that if the parasite free salmon is an option he could've used this as a secret weapon for Yamaoka instead, so he might use a different food item as a theme to give Yamaoka the loss.

For example, Kaibara maybe got all huffy and distrustful of the salmon but Yamaoka can prove that Norwegian salmon can revolutionize Japanese cooking (as it actually did IRL) and the contest is either a draw or Yamaoka's win.
