Literally he shouldve been fired by now. I know its actually real hard to get fired in Japan but....like, he has fucked up sooo many times and almost ruined his company's reputation many times over. What should it have to taaaake?? (And Koizumi was fully within his rights to fire him, and I'm not even a Koizumi fan. Boozing around IN the office and forcibly making your coworker drink booze is fucked and seeing Tomii cry about being fired made me feel fuckall but contempt. Rancid fucking character, tbh.)

The one chapter I can say I was invested in his going on's was the Black Sashimi one. Its the one arc hes had where they did anything interesting with him.

His backstory is actually sad even sadder than Yamaoka but I would absolutely hate him as coworker even if I knew his backstory

Realistically, Tomii should've been gone so long ago, but because of the sitcom-style storytelling that Oishinbo uses, where everything returns to status quo (for the most part) by the end of each chapter/story arc (if applicable), unfortunately, of course, Tomii would retain his employment.

If anything, from what I see so far from MangaDex comments and Google searches, I think it's funny that while characters like Tomii and Yuzan have Japanese readers who either still tolerate/admire them (to some degree) or despise them entirely, it's almost entirely the latter with non-Japanese readers like us, where almost no one outside of Japan likes either of them.

About Tomii's background, I think it's interesting that Kariya was actually born around the same time as Tomii in Beijing (though I don't know if Kariya is an orphan). So I guess that's where Kariya finds inspiration for Tomii's background.

People like Tomii should have been fired a long time ago, sobbing backstory be damned. And you shouldn't be drunk during work time too as well, especially not in the workplace. Couldn't they have gone to the bar instead? He really should be demoted, replaced by Kurita.

I LOVE the Kaiseki chapter where he shows how truly knowledgeable he is whilst also acting like a prick (The french chef-cum owner had every right to throw him out for causing a stir tbh. The fucking rudeness to go into a restaurant and going " Thank you, I dont want YOUR cooking, I'll insult yours and push mine. ") and Yamaoka getting a win with the tuna and mayo, and getting to throw the win in his face. Delightful.

Making him more grounded and "sagely" whilst also not....just verbally retconning the fact that until we know different, hes a abuser that killed his wife via exhaustion. That is certainly a choice. Like that is what he is even now until the story gives us any more context. And those two characterizations clash when the story tries to go " Dont you respect how hes willing to give advice and wants the best for Japan despite his personality? "

No, not really.

It feels like Kariya realized midway into the story he actually wants a author tract sort of " antagonist " where " we can agree to disagree " when he wrote a VILLAIN.

Kurita wouldn’t have the seniority to become Deputy Director since of the regular characters who work at Tozai, she’s the newest. The way Japanese work culture goes is that Yamaoka would get the job before she would because he’s more senior.

There aren't any comments on mushroom so I will add one. I believe people used (not sure how about now) intentionally mislabel oyster mushroom because they are cheap and easy to farm grown as opposed to more tasty and much more expensive look alikes.
I recently had some wild mushroom hotpot, absolutely delectable. I would also recommend adding mushroom (preferable the darker ones) into stir fries and soups and sauces. It's a natural umami boost. I often glaze my steak in a mushroom sauce instead of butter.

Off the top of my head, “Yakumo wants to feed/Beauty and the Feast” and Dr Stone both had Oishinbo references (although thinking back on it, the Dr stone reference doesn’t support my theory).

There’s definitely been others but I can’t remember them off the top of my head. 😞
