A fairly good chapter that was utterly ruined by Tabata and slapstick. Seriously, how in the fuck is anyone supposed to find Yamaoka literally concussed and bleeding funny?

Yamaoka really needs to work elsewhere. How long is he going to endure the abuse and harassment from his co-workers before he snapped anyway.

Look guys, violence slap stick comedy for the thousandth time. Now laugh
Indeed. And if I'm being honest, if it was just the usual "cloud of dust" cartoony slapstick with Yamaoka getting a nondescript beating, I'd have been a little more okay with it. But this is the most realistically hurt I've seen Yamaoka drawn in quite some time, maybe even in the whole of the manga. And that point, it's not slapstick, it's assault.

Tomii atleast usually gets SOME comeup when hes vile.

Tabata doesnt face any sort of Karma this chapter. She just comes across as cruel.
Which fucking sucks because I used to like chapters about her, but I think overall, in a cast of flanderized characters, she mightve gotten it the worst because she went from " The levelheaded middleaged one of the girls with a fun past " to " Well, shes a violent busybody who keeps intruding when not asked. " with literally nothing else to her.

And yeah, a perfectly fine chapter entirely overshadowed by all this.

Yeah exactly, I was taken aback by just how fucked up he is lmao??? it's so weird, what a weird trope. It's as if they want the cartoony Looney Tunes beat of slapstick comedy but 99 percent of the rest of the manga is a rather realistic portrayal of white collar work and Japanese culture. It just feels tonally jarring.

And they even put his beat up face in the chapter-ender page again, like... do people actually think this was funny back then?

Oishinbo theory, Yamaoka choose to work at tozai nwespaper because the abuse there reminds him of his home

The Japanese love this kind of humor. Granted, it's not the only type they like, but if you watch enough comedic anime, television comedies, or even see clips of Japanese game shows, you'll see that it's very ingrained in the culture.

That's not what I mean, man. I know Japan loves them some good slapstick.
I do read slapstick-heavy manga like Takahashi Rumiko works too, but the slapstick never feels this violent before.
Even just within Oishinbo, in older chapters when Yamaoka gets beat up he kind of just gets thrown across the room, or there's the usual comedic cartoon bumps. Lately the injuries actually look serious, with detailed bloody face and black eye, which actually stick on him for a few more panels so it just comes across as actually-violent, not "comedy".
