I must say, so far, I'm pretty impressed with this arc. It's almost like a throwback to the first ten or so volumes where the comedy isn't just based on beating Yamaoka up, but rather on weirdo characters behaving in funny ways like this Ramen Institute guy. I'm really enjoying it.
That's exactly what I was thinking, though I know that series as Mr. Ajikko. A scrappy underdog is at risk of being run out of business by a powerful restaurant group, so they seek the main character's help to develop a secret recipe to save their business. Bonus points for having a widow with a kid, since the main character of Mr. Ajikko is a child who runs his dead dad's restaurant with his mom. This felt like a very different manga. This chapter makes me think of "Born to Cook", another classic cooking manga for some reason
The guy reminds me a lot of that Kim Seong Wan guy who became Yamaoka's opponent during the Korean Cuisine Battle arc, a boisterous yet honorable man who gave Yamaoka all the time he needed to make his preparations. On the other hand, the leader of the Ryuusei seems to be an honourable man. I'd love to see the confrontation between Yamaoka and him and hopefully, Kaibara won't appear in this long saga.
A longer arc again, bleh.
It's nice conceptually, and I do want to know why a guy that seems really earnest about cooking is part of a sleazy business takeover scheme. I just feel ugh because there is a bunch of random nonsensical stuff being spouted.
"If this keeps up people will lose interest in ramen altogether". Humans are not monolith. No matter how good that meteor ramen is there will always be people who prefer something else.
Like normally I would way it's probably exaggerated a bit for the manga (especially since there was the whacky research institute there), but I can't help but think that Kariya's writing and IRL behaviour indicate that's he actually is this kind of extreme alarmist type of guy. That's why the stuff he says and does almost always go overboard.
It's a cry wolf thing. Kariya does this alarmist thing too much and very often actually 100% sincerely meant it, so I'm just a bit less forgiving about it.Meh, I generally am not all that sympathetic to Kariya’s views on stuff like that, but I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and just say he’s using it as a writer’s exaggeration considering that at the time, ramen was starting to actually grow exponentially in popularity. This is the era where the whole “college student eating cheap ramen” started.
As for it being a super long arc, yeah, they do get tedious to work on. Anything longer than three chapters and I’ve tended to just want it to end, but maybe this’ll be better! I’ll be optimistic!
