Obviously the box contains a super special ingredient that is stupid fucking expensive, but who cares about making a profit when you could be selling the ultimate ramen at your roadside ramen shop!?Gah. Of course. They need an attractive looking box to attract customers. Duh.
I genuinely feel like screaming right now. I know I sound like a broken record, but I can’t help it! They devoted a whole chapter of this ridiculous arc just to glazing Yuzan, and turned Yamaoka into a screeching manchild to do it! Yamaoka used to be capable of admitting Yuzan had genuine skill at some point, but now they literally have him throwing a tantrum while Kurita praises Yuzan to high heaven! I’m just so exhausted of this character treatment! This arc doesn’t even have particularly engaging food descriptions to make up for the character bullshit! I’m sorry for coming in and saying the same thing on nearly every chapter, but it’s a problem that keeps getting worse, and I need to put my thoughts somewhere or I’ll go nutty.
Yeah, plus him and Kurita are the couple who bickers. Half of their "flirting" is when both of them are getting real passionate about their food opinions.I think it’s noticeable that Yamaoka really only gets mad when Kurita talks him up because he’s in love with her and it genuinely hurts him for her to defend him.
Or maybe I’m just trying too hard to make it make sense, but I’ve noticed that he only seems to get upset when Kurita praises him.
See, I would accept that had he not also freaked out at the very start of the chapter and told the entire crew not to listen to a word that Yuzan says. I can't think of a time we've ever seen that kind of frothing at the mouth rabid anger and vitriol towards Yuzan, especially to total strangers, and especially especially when he barely said anything negative. It just feels out-of-character; he's been snarky and dismissive of Yuzan, and he's gotten hot under the collar when Yuzan belittles him, but those were in the company of his close friends and colleagues, and again, they were usually prompted by Yuzan saying something overly derogatory or cruel. This just felt like a 0 to 100 escalation done entirely to make Yamaoka look like a buffoon.I think it’s noticeable that Yamaoka really only gets mad when Kurita talks him up because he’s in love with her and it genuinely hurts him for her to defend him.

And I would agree with you if I trusted that that was the story Kariya was trying to tell. But I don't. I genuinely think that Kariya views Yuzan as his mouthpiece and thus is always and exclusively correct in everything he does, I genuinely think he's written Yamaoka as an idiot who only can win with Yuzan's aid, and I genuinely think that Kariya isn't capable of writing that nuanced of a relationship even if he tried. And I'm not convinced he's trying. I am very happy for you that you can see an interesting dynamic in these characters, but for me, it just feels like bad writing, both from a character and narrative perspective.Yeah, plus him and Kurita are the couple who bickers. Also sorry I'm the problematic person who loves tsundere grandpa Yuzan who clearly tries to love his child but fucks it all up, and can only be helpful if he isn't explicitly seen as helpful. I love a toxic relationship like this, I just find it more interesting that despite trying to be a pinnacle gourmet and find the soul of food he's an awful fucking father who can't relate to his own kid out of pride.
Because clearly Yamaoka and Yuzan are similar—they both love food and buck ostentatious convention. How they come at a problem in different ways is what drives the drama, and that's really why I like this manga versus others of the same vein.
I mean, seeing how everyone loves abusing Yamaoka, I don't think they are capable of realising what the hell was wrong with Yuzan. To be honest with you, I think that the people who love giving Yamaoka the short end of the slapsticks will just consider Yuzan's actions as "giving tough love" to "build his son's character".Kurita may as well marry Yuzan since she likes him so godamn much. I hate how nobody takes yamaoka's history of abuse from Yuzan seriously.
Maybe it's just my two cents, but if Kariya actually depicted a helluva lot more of Yamaoka's past in the story and illustrated it with much more gravitas it deserved, I think even his colleagues will actually learn how to respect him a little bit more and not harm him as much when he's goofing around. But alas, it never happened because Kariya just subjected Yamaoka and everyone to flanderization just for some quick laughs that went on until the manga's hiatus.I mean, seeing how everyone loves abusing Yamaoka, I don't think they are capable of realising what the hell was wrong with Yuzan. Yeah she had a feeling it was that, I dunno why she wouldn't just mention it instead of just telling Yuzan that she doesn't know?Seeing how that man said the flavour is "elegant" and such. I have a feeling the ramen isn't bold enough to capture the local taste, especially when eaten outside. Like I said, just ask your customer for their opinion instead of guessing
