I love that she put Mafuyu first and promised to help with a difficult and undefined goal of finding her passion before receiving the tech help. Truly elegant.

It's part of her personality - mostly due to her need to feel she "helps" where she can, without asking for reward, thus living up to the standards of her hero Lady Setsuna.

This side story comes much later in the WN though - specifically, 116.3. Still, it is useful to bring it forward in the Manga given how little is known about Maifu - not least so we can stop wrapping spoiler tags around it

And here we see an extrovert finding an introvert to adopt.

Its a bit non-specific, but her magic seems to still work fine (see prevous chapter where she threatened a former co-worker with her decapitation thread Unique.)

Ah she was injured? I was under the impression that she just retired coz the whole OP assassin thing got too boring for her.

It's probably closer to her not enjoying the work, so she didn't try to fight her forced retirement due to the injury.

Its a stamina problem; She can't sustain combat for any length of time - so presumbly non-healable organ damage, lung scarring, that sort of thing?

One factor in this world is that things like healing potiions don't really exist - but high level explorers naturally recover faster than normal people (Lord Vomit for example recovered from his Elegant beating overnight. That a bad enough injury would heal only with internal scarring would fit that.)

I think what is needed though is an American FAKING a British accent, just slightly off - and occasionally forgetting when angry.

By contrast though, we will have a genuine Ojou-Sama and even the Emperial Family later on, who should be dubbed in more reliably upper class British. It's a shame Penelope Keith is no longer with us....

Mafuyu is, if we look at it clearly, a victim of child abuse. She is an orphan, thrown into a dungeon at an early age (despite, we are told, the Japanese government making it illegal for minors to enter the dungeon under 14) and intensively trained/indoctrinated to be part of a government "black ops" programme. Now, forced to retire by injury that could take years to heal (if at all) she is trying to build a new life as a normal schoolgirl - despite all the mental damage that role must have caused, and the loss of a role she had literally built her life and personality around.

Then we have Karlin, who for her faults, has created an achievable goal for herself, and genuinely wants to see her classmate thrive. Given we know what the situation is NOW, clearly Mafuyu is gonna get dragged into Karlin's orbit just as she needs to remake herself, and a big part of how she defines herself going forward will be in relation to how she guides and channels Karlin as a "big sister" type.
