Can anyone explain the significance of her switching from calling him Dad to Papa? My first guess was that the latter is more something a wife would use to refer to her husband affectionately, but I’m unsure of this.

My guess is the difference between formal and informal. Like "father" vs "daddy".
Or it could be even more simple, she may literally be calling him "step father" in formal situations, like in front of her mom, and calls him "daddy" in private. Given Japanese familial systems and how weird this one has been about biology this could actually be the more accurate case. Translators seem to just gloss over shit like this like we wouldn't get. English as a language isn't specifically formal, it's the situation and how it is that determines how formal you are.
When he gets home she calls him "father" and then in that last page she uses "papa". My guess is the translator hasn't bothered to distinguish it before now because it's never come up, or they could have just been lazy and swapped between them, but "papa" seems like a very specific word choice, as it's informal and intimate.
This could also explain why he's so uncomfortable with her calling him "papa" from the start.

He was her teacher so my guess is that's why he doesn't have a job.

He probably didn't pass the test and got obsessed with the Daughter. Whatever the dynamic is it involves BOTH mother AND daughter, so it wouldn't work out well for him to focus on the girl.

He literally just approached MC In hopes of getting close to the daughter again. Never asks about the wife, just keeps being a creep about Touko.

I think they don't want a creep. They want someone who will maintain boundaries or appearances. Think about how protective Touko has been about MC. Normally in these scenarios the girl is happy for people to think she's with her father.

In this one she's worked hard to get rid of that notion.

This manga is so insufferable at times. What fucking happened to give him that unnerved face at the end? NOTHING! From his perspective, here's how the day went:

• Went to work, boring day with little to note.
• Had a very odd meeting with a client discussing some very odd subjects that were rather inappropriate to the business
• Embarrassed in front of my junior who covered for me in that meeting, after I told her I'd take charge.
• Came home to my wife and step-daughter, preparing dinner in a good mood. It made me smile, happy to see them. Plus, cake!
• They heard from the doctor that my wife is cleared to have children again! I am hesitant about this, for reasons I can't really put my finger on
• My step daughter called me "Papa" in front of my wife, which she normally doesn't.
• My wife would prefer a boy, they asked me which gender of baby I would prefer.
• BWAAAA CLOSE UP ON FACE, ANXIOUS AND UNNERVED EXPRESSION

Nothing happened! Nothing! Just because we the reader know some shit is happening doesn't mean the main character should have that expression unless he's reading it right along with us!

That's why I am so confused about people screaming about all the red flags. We as the reader can see them, but only because of the framing of the panels, most of these "red flag" situations are really not that bad without the metacontext we as the reader get.

Especially in this chapter, just like you said, nothing concerning was said or done by the Mother and Daughter. The strange man is much more concerning, but again, people irl would think "What a creep" and leave it at that.

I am still very stoked for the reveal of what their plan is, and if there even is a grand plan or if we were all red herringed

I was thinking about this as well.. the author is injecting drama where there isn't actually anything happening. The whole point to this manga is the tease of the incestous relationship between father and step-daughter and I might be wrong but can't help but feel the author is somewhat just dragging out the mystery as they don't have the courage to go all-in with the 'car-crash' scenario.

If the ex-hubby wanted them to split up, wouldn’t telling the MC the truth be the easiest way? We don’t know what the truth is but we’re being led to believe that it’s bad enough that nobody sane would agree to it.

I’m still surprised that the ex was alive because it really felt like the guy they were targeting before was dead. But who knows how many different men these women have worked their way through. Maybe he’s not the most recent ex?
