Aoi seems to think the same, given a canon chapter where she's bringing up the topic with Miyo. (while Mahiro is off to the side looking VERY uncomfortable)

I'm not into BL and I'm not part of that culture so I can't weigh in either way. But I did learn that fujoshi are way more openminded than they're often portrayed as being.

This feels contradictory (not on you, on your friend) given we have both read a lot of GB yuri that are a boy gets magically transformed into a girl via isekai into new body or just body transformation, very often have a male mindset (at least in the beginning), who then has a romance with a woman, and these are exclusively called yuri, shoujo-ai, GL, etc. instead of hetero, straight, hetcomp, etc. which is what this argument is saying it should be instead... or inversely it also is saying the niche subgenre of GB 801 where a woman is instead transformed via the same methods into a man who then gets into a romance with another man (almost always sexually too given it's 801) is not actually 801 since the mental state of this woman turned man is still a woman and as such would not be 801 which I doubt even she would argue is the case...

Well, in the same way that a pairing with a Boy x Genderbended Boy (Now Physically a Girl) would be considered BL in a Mental Level, then one with a Girl x Genderbended Boy (Now Physically a Girl) could be considered GL in a Physical Level.
After all, this aren't subjects that can be all thrown into the same bag that has always been used to describe sexuality and gender while ignoring anything outside the standard.
So, taking into consideration Mental and Physical when talking about BL and GL is a nice touch in my opinion.
It recognizes the identity of the person, regardless of what fate turned them into against their will. Or even by their own will, if they are into that.

....Well, I say that I like that it recognizes their identity, but I'm pretty much into forcing the genderbended dude into being a girly girl, especially if he truly HATES every moment of it, but that's on me XD.
I can like both!
