Well yeah, he wasn't certainly a 'good guy'. However he was a victim of the curse of his family (curse or power, depending on who you ask), and losing her sister made him lonely and probably bitter towards normal people. He could have lived as a hermit or something like that, but he could've never be near women again.

Could've done that but nope...gotta leave a pile of dead bodies in his wake. Look, in his first appearance, I can understand but later, dude intentionally turn women into onis...and there goes any sympathy I have for him.

Sure, he went totally insane, after remaining alone. At the end of the story he was willing to sacrifice every woman he could, just to survive. Clearly he had became like an oni.
