@BCS: Probably from the dark in dark elf being written in katakana, while the other one is probably Black Mage (Kuromajutsushi)

Similarly homunculus is usually written in kana so Homu.

The Dark Elf's retort is that he literally just use the first bit of their identity to be their name.
