If I remember my schooling correctly, that’s generally accepted as one of the reasons WW1 had such a high body count – war culture was still running on ye old honor and chivalry mores when the efficacy of modern weaponry and tactics made those beliefs impractical.
“Proudly distinguish yourself with your bright saber in hand to raise troop morale” was from a time before howitzers and rifled barrels.

Our Orc nation hasn’t yet had a war with their modernized military, so their older values haven’t been slapped with reality yet.

that's how it goes when technology in war advances too much that soldiers couldn't adapt in time.
Even in early-WW2, people were fighting like WW1 with horses, sabers, oil lanterns horse-drawn carriages, and trenches. The development of Motorized vehicle for transport, and Electric Torches(called a flashlgiht by G.Is for its shit battery) were a commodity used only to the later waves of soldier.
