What purpose did it have to bring new people "to be trained" to whatever they actually want from them, if they have access to the perfect evolution already?
I thought he was in hiding somewhere and was an asset only to himself, but if he's working with them, then why go through all of this?

Like the only possibility I can think of is to feed new skills into the old hero? But yeah it makes no sense.

I have no sympathy for the murderer getting tortured but for sure they are going for make him insane and lose all morals and fear. This is really setting up more that none of the students should have stayed with the EMPIRE THAT KEEPS LYING TO THEM. Why in the living feck do they keep going back when they KNOW they are being used and abused.

Also as we meet more and more of the hero's of the past why are the new ones needed? The demons had no power until MC released the demon queen from her shackles. Infact its ludicrous that demons even exist if the entire hero's party still exists for 400 YEARS and obviously way more powerful then anything the demons have including the queen.

yeah, SEEMS like plothole to me, but hear me out. what if that ISNT ray, but a replication of him twisted and distorted by its creation process being botched in some way. after all diddnt that one girl say she wasnt sure if she was alive? even then copy or not they seem stable enough to be used so origonal point still stands... his powers even seem intact, seems the author might have boxed themself with this introduction. provided im not misrecalling
