Near as I can tell, the gold scene was to establish that to him all the more “valuable” resources should be used for practical things and only gold should be used for wealth

"Yellow sweets"? Couldn't they come up with a better euphemism? I'm curious about the gold coins. Is he planning on introducing coins minted with his likeness? Does he plan on silver coinage as well? The other bit about the culture of the planet--having seen what passes for fashion elsewhere, he should count himself lucky that his population looks bland.

Yes but planning to make them as a currency in his land is more problematic. It could potentially lead to economic drop, lesser trades, etc. since other lands see other minerals as more precious than gold like mythril (which can be more precious irl). Other than that, the current state of the MC is annoying to bear. His views are too small. Imagine developing your land just to steal from them, it's very narrow-minded.
