Wouldn't it be much more likely that she was captured or killed compared to deserted? Especially since she's a noble and was sent to the capitol where it would be safer. I don't get that decision...

I don't like where this is headed. I think this would have been better as a 1 volume title.

Thanks for the TL!

A deserter? Not MIA?
Looks like the author ran out of ideas and pulled an asspull. Well done. You're 'bout to fuck this shit up. As if the Japanese mental torture arc wasn't dumb enough.

The author really tries to put realism into this story, but fails spectacularly because he can't think it through. First the government isolation, and now this, why would anyone possibly consider her a deserter, instead of killed or captured, I do not know. It makes no sense.

no body no signs of a fight, she left the front line as a messenger, she probably didn't reach the next town, the reinforcements didn't meet with her on route, why wouldn't they consider her a deserter?

so many of you seems like didn't read pages 3, 4, 5, 17.

Some of this people don't really read huh. She was a deserter from their point of view. I mean, she left the battlefield as messenger, didn't reach the capital, no news from her from either the reinforcements or such.

@Nineteen Some readers got triggered cause there are more logical way to explain the missing of the female knight.

@mase_aga logic is not always correct. it's best assume the worst case scenario when it comes to milliary

I feel it's pretty standard to assume desertion when a soldier disappears with no traces left behind, no?

Without reason or doubt? ...Not really.

Let's look at this logically:
1.) She was a noble.
2.) She was a trained soldier.
3.) She was leaving a hopeless battle to go to a safer place to call for reinforcements.
4.) She still WAS in enemy territory.
5.) Absolutely no sight has been seen of her.
6.) It's unlikely she was carrying around much money with her on the battlefield.
7.) She's a woman and noble, so she'd stick out like a sore thumb with anyone that was looking for her.

Alternatively:
1a.) While a trained soldier, she was also too young to be used to battle. And while she was leaving a hopeless battle to get reinforcements, she could have decided "screw this, I don't want to die" and flee.
2a.) It could be the reason no one has seen her is because she's laying low or she's fled to another country.
3a.) She still was in enemy territory, and thus COULD have surrendered to the enemy (considering her be terrified of the pigmen/orcs, however, for very eromanga reasons and their general treatment of people, this seems hard as fuck to believe that anyone would seriously consider this, however) and/or defected to them.

Adding it up with the circumstances and what with the knights and nobles knew, it's pretty fucking silly to declare her wanted for treason. Now, had there been traces of her or there was something to raise suspicion (like she had a bunch of money on her or was seen riding in the wrong direction or something) then it'd be much more reasonable to assume it. Realistically, anyone should be thinking "she's dead or captured." And even the "captured" would be doubtful because you might be able to see the enemy reacted to any intel from her orders/message.

@definitionofinsanity I'm guessing at this point they must have tried tracking her. Since she's in a different world, her tracks would have disappeared. Meaning the only logical explanation from their perspective is that she erased her own tracks to not be found. If she was captured, they would have ransomed her. If she was free, she would have returned. It's been a month when they passed the verdict. Desertion.

All your alternative points are basically desertion.

I'm not saying it's 'fair' or 'right', but when a soldier disappears without a trace, they should get wanted for desertion. Worst case, they are a traitor. Best case, they can explain themselves in court.

"You're saying she rode through enemy occupied territory during a pitch battle that they were on the verge of being wiped out in and she never arrived at her destination and seems to have literally disappeared without a trace? There's only one explanation for this..."
"Yes m'lord. She seems to have been captured or kille-"
"...SHE MUST OBVIOUSLY BE A DESERTER! A COWARDLY TRAITOR!"

...I can not express into fathomable words how fucking bonkers it is for you think that's a reasonable conclusion, let alone seemingly an obvious one. Somehow. And we often don't find shit for traces of people in today's modern world, so this "Ye Olde CSI" expectation of finding a body or a sign of a fight is kinda telling me maybe you're not thinking about this as critically as you could or should be.

Unless there is something that the knights know or suspect that we as the reader are not aware of, the knights declaring her a deserter in these circumstances is just fucking silly. Missing In Action? Sure. Deserter? On what evidence? That she disappeared in the middle of a battle on the way to TRY to get reinforcements? I mean, it's not like they have orcs in their ranks that might potentially eat dead bodies or anyt... Hell, knowing how little we know about her world and her circumstances, declaring her a "deserter" could be their way of trying to avoid the shame of her failing in her duty or some sort of nobility politics shenanigans for all we know and not their actual literal conclusion. Unlikely? Yes. But you'd have to admit that given just how little we as the reader know that it could be easily possible.

We often have search parties of hundreds or thousands of people with things like aircraft and cadaver dogs searching an area where someone that was missing was KNOWN to be in... and find ABSOLUTELY FUCK ALL. No body, no tracks, nothing.

You're doing an awful lot of assuming for a medieval society that might just get on their horses and ride out and around a bit for all we know. And even if they did find her tracks... "covering your tracks" involves erasing them. Like with branches, foliage/vegetation or dirt. All of which are abnormal disruptions to the ground and of which a decent tracker will notice.

If she was captured, they would have ransomed her. If she was free, she would have returned. It's been a month when they passed the verdict. Desertion.

No. If it was an enemy human faction, they MIGHT have ransomed her.
Let's re-read Chapter 1, shall we?

...W-W-Well... I'm... I'm sure that AFTER the orcs were done raping her that they would surely uphold themselves to civilized standards and engage in ransom offers for her safety.
...Yeah. That makes sense. Yep. They sound like a reasonable bunch.

All your alternative points are basically desertion.
...Duh. As they were expressly meant to be. And to show how the evidence that she isn't a deserter outweighs the evidence she is. And to show how fucking silly it is to immediately assume she is one.

I'm not saying it's 'fair' or 'right', but when a soldier disappears without a trace, they should get wanted for desertion. Worst case, they are a traitor. Best case, they can explain themselves in court.
...I'm going to stop before I say something that will get me banned.

Why are you thinking that she is going into enemy territory? When she is retreating as a messenger to the capital? Where did you read that she got into enemy territory? They are fighting in a fort behind them is the kingdom (page 4 first panel) the enemy is breaching the fort to invade the country, so why are you saying that she is going through enemy occupied territory? no really where do you read that? she was escaping from orcs, while they on the fort are fighting savages. probably you should go re-read the first chapters, because seems like you don't know what you are talking about

"Where did you read that she got into enemy territory"
"She was escaping from orcs"

...The fact that you think that doesn't torpedo your own argument is... fucking fascinating.
"She wasn't in enemy territory. She just ran into the enemy forces." Do you even listen to the shit you're spouting? The very fact that she encountered the enemy establishes the fact that it's enemy territory. I'm guessing you just ran off the assumption that in a battle the two enemy forces face off at each other like it's a chess board and there's nothing like auxiliaries, scouts or cavalry or probing units that go off elsewhere. Like "it's okay, she was running to the area behind the fort so that's not enemy territory". Try telling the enemy that. I'm guessing you're also running off the assumption, incorrectly, that enemy territory means the enemy has occupied it, killed all your forces and literally planted their fucking flag around the entire area.

I give the fuck up.

Shinobi-Horse is using the technique "Blink" or "Teleport".

@cor3zone: "All your alternative points are basically desertion."
I believe that was the point. He himself thought of it, while coming up with arguments against the desertion, and just wanted to be fair by also mentioning them.

So I reread the pages 3, 4, 5, and 17. To sum it up: Those soldiers are incredible brave, but they have to be it, as the are the last line of defense. If a messenger would have come through, there would be a chance reinforcements arrive the next day and they did, so some messenger made it. In chapter 2 Christina had the nightmare, she remembered being chased by orcs and being call a coward, so there is a chance of a misunderstanding. Or maybe the surviving messengers saw, she has been chased, didn't do anything, knew they would be asked about the whereabouts of that one noble daughter and came up with an explanation, that would save their butts in case some mad noble would unreasonable demand their heads for not helping her instead doing their job and delivering the message, which HAS BEEN MORE IMPORTANT.

Anyway there has to be a damn good reason to declare her a traitor as delivering that message has been dangerous, there have been enemies and there are very good reasons for not finding her corpse and equipment beside desertion.

Talking about realism, that brother of hers hold back 5000 enemies even though they already managed to put a hole into the wall? I know one person might make a difference, but this is.....a mary sue.
