Honestly, kudos to the author for creating a scene like this. Actually quite clever to use her injury to create a scene where we know she's in no mental state to lie, so we can tell she genuinely believes what she's saying.

I can only guess she thinks what MC labels as 'abuse' that she calls 'love' because of parents. As in, from one way or another, committing violence/abuse on your loved one = love. The parents could of done it to each other, one or both of them could have done it to her, it's the only thing I can think of that her twisted definition of love would make sense.

Even if we understand why, though, that doesn't excuse her treatment towards MC, to not have some awareness that how she had treated her boyfriend is different from the norm. She should have sensed something was amiss from the love stories she heard from her friends, if she even had any, but if she doesn't, then it solidifies how fucked up her situation is.

Even still, I have no sympathies for her.

Maybe in her view, she was just trying to shape him up into a proper boyfriend, and thus he should be grateful for that, and not that she was just constantly putting him down, and making him miserable for her actions.

She wasn't purposely malicious while growing up, but she has no self awareness, which in it's own way it's more fucked up than actually being aware of how much of a piece of shit you are, and still doing it.

Not malicious? What is making him stand in the rain for a FULL HOUR waiting for her outside of the restaurant for a bet? Then she mocks him before he collapses and mocks him further in the hospital? If that wasn't malicious she's a full-blown sociopath. (Which would fit, I admit.) There's no way that a sane person would not consider that malicious.

All of the brainwashing/gaslighting that she's done over the years is not something that "accidently" happens either.

This is actually kinda realistic.. sadly perpetrators of domestic abuse rarely understand their actions and are frequently sufferers of personality disorders themselves. Not that it excuses the behaviour in the slightest.. kinda props to the author for going there though. Hope MC-kun moves on and Hanabi gets the help she clearly needs.
