Ironically, this actually made me like her character (not her, to be clear). No traffic, convoluted back story for a forced, easy redemption. She just sucks. Just like real life.

You're right, with no tragic backstory to fall back on, it just solidifies how much of a shitty person she really is. If anything, she was too privileged with nobody calling out and correcting her bad behavior early-on before it got out of hand. Just like real life.

I do definitely think Hanabi loved him, but it was a corrupt kind of love that turned into obsession. There are people that are so obsessed with their partners that they do this in real life. It starts out as love and turns corrupt when they start to get feelings of doubt in the strength of the relationship.

An example is in sexual assault. Even if the perpetrator is caught and punished the ruckus that it causes shames the victim and their family.
