When you make the story so convoluted that it drives readers away. Also there are so many "Childhood Friend is the Loser... but are they?" manga right now that it's lost in the trope. In the end it couldn't get ahead of the rest.

Well, on the positive, at least it wasn't an isekai.
Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but are there actually a lot of manga where the childhood friend actually has a chance recently? I haven't noticed. Please lead me to the promised land.

In romcom manga, it's a small trend that started a few years ago. Basically a few authors started to try to buck "the childhood friend is the love loser" trope. I don't think many lasted long, but it was a trend among new and independent authors for awhile. From there came a lot of childhood friend as the lead fighting the trope in some form, even one right now that is a harem series were they are all "Childhood Friends".

If you want another good example of the... I guess anti trope, there is the slightly more ecchi "Himegasaki Sakurako wa Kyoumo Fubin Kawaii!".

All in all, I can't think of any single one that got super popular off the top of my head, most just got a dozen to a few dozen chapters, but got published for probably "being different" and the editors probably thought there was a trend.

Oh don't get me wrong, I liked the story from the start, but as the chapters as of late have become a bit muddled and feel a bit rushed. Though now hearing that the series is being made to wrap up, I can see why. Hopefully we get a decent conclusion and not just one made to burn the story (and bridges) to the ground as some authors have taken to doing when they get axed.

I don't get why people are saying this is an L for Hinaki. She has never been "in love" with MC. Yes she loves him, but in a familial kind of way. She has never once shown any kind of romantic interest in the boy. She's just worried that if he falls in love she'll lose him just like she did her other friends.

Translator said in the credits page it has been dropping ratings more and more for weeks now, and Japan manga publishing companies are cut-throat as fuck. It is very possible the author was given a deadline to finish the story with X amount of chaps. :meguuusad:
That's a massive rip. Would be sad to see her just... go independent like that. Like I should be fine with it, since she's cool with it, but it also feels out of left field. Idk. I can't tell if i'm alone on that thought.

This is so not the same story i started with. These are not the same charters from the start of the story. Like what the hell happened.
I feel like author tried to make this series more popular and simplified/dumbed down their characters. but a series like this one is pretty niche in any case, and he ended up alienating the readers who liked it by simplifying the characters.

Thanks for the update!

Funny thing is that relationships can really be just as screwed up, confusing or convoluted like this in real life.
I suppose this will not get any anime adaptation soon right? Especially since the source material will be ending soon as well.

On another note, the YumeOchi manga is also ending this November 2023 (with its 4th volume too) - that was also a quick one but yeah it was getting nowhere after all.

Every reader who completely misread the story and thought Hinaki was actually in the running and wasn't just a close friend going crazy is too funny. I actually quite liked the chapter, the confession was very cute and everyone progressed in the way that makes sense for this story: Hinaki learning to give the two their alone time and everyone setting their priorities straight. Just a shame that because the manga is essentially getting axed, everything is rushed as hell. I will definitely follow the author's next work if anyone will be translating to see how they adjust their writing after this. The potential is there.

The author's other ongoing series is a better read anyways, imo. This series is fine, but it felt like it was never going to be more than what it is, so I'm okay with it ending.

I can see why its getting axed, but since i've read it from the start I feel a bit bad. I wonder if the mangaka is going to continue Meguro-san after this one is finished
