Childhood friend's imouto is a rare but spicy route. I approb

That being said, it's obvious that she stands no chance against Riri, so no point in actually rooting for her :nyoron:

Love how everyone's debating the merits and demerits of Shindou as a person as if he's some narrative specimen destined for picking-apart under a literary microscope when the man genuinely honest-to-goodness just seems happy to have two sandwiches. He has two brain cells -- I'm pretty sure his reaction to getting a third-person rundown of his life situation would be "woah... that's crazy" before promptly forgetting about it. His entire existence is a joke, and that is okay. He's a punching bag, but he's too aloof to be sad about it.

Suzuna on the other hand is a very silly girl in spite of her introversion. Love the writing in this manga.

I find it amusing that the comment section hates Shindou for being a lazy MC that the girls gravitated towards for no reason and being generally selfish in nature when, in fact, Suzuna is the exact same thing. She saved Riri from the guys, just like the male MC would have, and is now getting bento's from the little sister for free, just like the male MC would have, despite putting in minimum effort. The only major difference is that she's a largely negative person deluding herself into being non-existent whereas he is a largely positive person deluding himself into being more than he is.

It's not harem, nor is it poly. There's a novel, read it if you don't believe me.
I think their misreading is understandable because this story's connection with harem is a little complicated.

  • It's not a harem because the affection from secondary characters is within non-romantic bounds for single-romance, non-romantic, and real life contexts. There's not even third-party pining. Case closed. Literally not harem.

  • The story satirizes harem. That includes friendly affection, which alludes to the original timeline and rivals. Teasing about romance and rivals will be misread as harem. Teasing a harem is a fairly reliable heuristic for recognizing harem, and this meta-about-harems story trips the heuristic.

  • An episodic cycle of characters approving of and even flirting with a protagonist is common outside harem, where it's almost universal. This builds up the protagonist's self-esteem and apparent worth. Suzuna notes this, and is living evidence the trope overly idealistic, because she needs one close ally above friendships.

The story and Suzuna's troubles are only one degree removed from harem by satirizing it, so it will be extremely hard to convince people their yuri/shipper goggles are on too tight until well past the halfway point. Especially if their heuristic or personal definition is satisfied by the bevy of tropes common for harem stories.

Great update, nice to see a more upgraded version of Riri being possessive.

On the other hand, despite reading the novel, it didn't point out if Kokona flipped the switch into liking Suzuna. Since the chapter shows one panel of Kokona blushing, can confirm she likes her now. Made more sense that she's firing up the argument with Riri lmao.

Oh, it gets so much worse. It's great. :pacman:

The difference is Suzuna avoids situations but is more empathetic despite her trauma. And Shindou as we know him is passive and self-centered. It's understandable that Suzuna will avoid or not know how to value things that don't do much for her wants or needs, and Suzuna is much kinder and isn't reliant on gamelike coincidences to grow.

So in this chapter, Suzuna is not the same exact thing. She got what she didn't want, after helping more than she had to, and can't navigate that. Suzuna may not recognize Kokona is a friend, but the distractions and Riri's reliability reduced her isolation.

He's incredibly passive, not the sort who would confront a drunkard at the start of the game. Suzuna was walking home with him as usual. Shindou only moved because of the begging and cajoling of his childhood friend until he was desperate to prove his masculinity. Suzuna figured the best and safest method to help Riri was to get Shindou involved. Riri can't know since Shindou wants to look manly around her.

Way different.

I still kinda hate the FMC, her stupidity, denseness and indifference is getting old.
Other than that, absolute cinema.
Thanks for the chapter!

Lmfaoooo page 20 you can see bro just get ready to leave

Ngl unlike many others I don’t hate the former harem protag, he has the mind of a child, he’s so useless and passive I feel bad for him lol
At least he has his tasty sandwiches now and knows when to step out when things get annoying

I love that she’s failing to realise the harem is now forming around her. Take a hint girl

I have said this multiple times: this isn't a harem series.
Look, I am definitely taking your word for it, but are we SURE? I mean that was a VERY suggestive tamagoyaki… She probably had her revelation mid bento cooking and had already made it that shape for her brother. Or wanted to show off her skills.

Because this Suzuna/Riri stuff is just FIRE! 🔥🔥🔥 It would only really be a harem if Suzuna were interested, and the only real development in that direction is with our favourite gyaru.

Not gonna lie, the yandere wanna be Riri is ultra annoying and she is lucky that MC is a massive pushover. Anyone else would tell her to fuck off long ago.

It bothers me and makes me feel pity for how useless the original protagonist is. But I'm also bothered by Riri's attitude. She is so possessive and intrusive towards Suzuna that it becomes annoying and unplesant. Kokona is more interesting in that respect than Riri, as she seems to reason and not get carried away.
